69/70 camper/10?

I was at the store the other day and may have learned something new. (I thought I knew and had seen it all!). Stock looking 69/70 1/2 ton with camper special/10 badges on the fenders. Did they make a camper special 1/2 ton back then? They do make or made a 1500HD with 3/4 ton 8 lug wheels at least in 2007 but this old one was a first for me.

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

Sorry don't know. I just think it's funny they make a 1500HD with 3/4 ton 8 lug suspension. And they used to make (early 90's) a 2500LD with 1/2 ton 6 lug suspension. I've been looking at 1st gen D#dge diesels and they made a 3/4 ton dualie. I think it's mostly just marketing BS. To me if you want a HD 1/2 ton, buy a 3/4 ton!

I use to work at a Ford dealership and I could see it with their mid 90's early 2000 F-150's as they were more like car suspension (older fullsize) and there F-250 SD's were more like 1 tons.

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

Yup! I had a`69 K/10 that was a Custom Camper/10 and boy do I wish I kept it.It was my first GM 4wd and I sold it to get a 3/4t cuz I considered 1/2 tons too wimpy.Mostly cuz it was a 3spd,though.It had the Custom trim in that burgundy (Vermillion?) with the unique`69 red interior with the bowties on the door panel. It had the woodfloor, tool & stowage, silver factory pinstripe, tach, cab lights, and black 8" steelies.Prolly more.I PAID $500 FOR IT!! That was crazy cheap way back then.Heck,it was about 10 years old with no rust. This was my pipe dream drawing of it.You may be able to see the fender badge:

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

I knew I shouldn't ahve taken the Tylenol/Sudafed combo for a cold, it made me speak Ford!! At least you mean what I know!!

My motto is when I learn something new I can go home, some days I'm at work late.

thanks for the info. and I also just saw the late 80s-mid 90's Chevy 2500 with 1/2 ton wheels 2 weeks ago. It had 6 lug ralleys on it.

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

I think the late model game with numbers is a way around federal emissions and mileage requirements. The last Diesel Suburbans were available as 1500s with 8-lug.It was a way to bring the overall average fuel economy up,for example. You could get a 2500 or 1500 and they were the same.

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

The first custom campers 65/66 were only 3/4 tons. In 67 the package was extened to 1/2 tons, and 1 tons, but large majority were 3/4 tons. Around 1970 the 1/2 ton package dissappeared for good. GM recommended only very light units on 1/2 tons during the period.

Re: 69/70 camper/10?

It took me a long time to find those emblems for my collection, but yes it is the real deal. I actually bought a 70 custom camper/10 last year.
