How bad did i just hurt myself??

Story.
Saturday i feel good, no issues, nice and healthy. I proceed to paint one door and two light buckets with one heavy coat of epoxy. I had a full respirator on. I didnt smell ANYTHING the whole time i painted and was probably in the booth (garage) for about 30 mins total.
About an hour later i get this tightness in my chest. It now is kinda uncomfortable to breathe and i have some dark phlem. (sorry i know gross).

Is this just coincidental or did i just permanetly SCREW my lungs???

I would say it is a coincidence. If you are in doubt, go see a doctor.

I would read the labels on the cans and if the problem persists talk to a doctor.

I have heard of a few guy's having trouble with the hard core paint's and primer's myself ,
stuff like
EPOXY
IMRON
PAINT STRIPPER (IN AN UNVENTALATED ROOM)
stuff like that ,
also they say that one chemical in paint called ISSOSIANATE (spelling ?)
can get you like that , what I have heard is that your body has a level of tolerance for the chemical and it won't bother you until you reach the level your body has set , after that it will make you sick every time you are around it the rest of your life ,,, that's what I've heard anyway ,
with what you posted I'd say it is either a coincidense or the ISO chemical

Check out the recommendations on the paint container for respirator type.Different respirator canisters filter different things. You need to make sure you have the right one for the product.

Re: How bad did i just hurt myself??

I do Occupational Health for a living and what you described sounds like it could be a coincidence. What kind of filters are using on your respirator? For paint you should be using Organic Vapor filters. As long as you didn't smell or taste any paint while using the respirator you most likely didn't get exposed. What 19673ontree is talking about is called sensitization, and he is pretty much right on the money with his description. If this is your first time painting like this, and you had the wrong filters on your respirator or it wasn't worn correctly, it is highly unlikely that you had any significant exposure. He also talked about isocyanates being in the paint. This is correct as well, but I don't believe it is used too much in automotive paints (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Refer to the MSDS to see what's in it. Isocyanates are mainly used in aircraft paint and other heavy duty applications as a corrosion inhibitor. Anyway, if it will make you feel better, go see a doc, better safe than sorry. My 2 cents.

From what I know, the Isocyanates are more in the sealers and various undercoats, but not so much in the color or clear coats.

Re: How bad did i just hurt myself??

Isocyanates, a form of cyanide, is in the activators for automotive paints and primers.
From what I've seen, it has different effects on different people. I myself, seem to get tired after painting.
It's important to remember that the Isocyanates are in the air for quite a while after painting and to be cautious of exposure, not only while spraying.

ISOs are most certainly in the good clears and any 2K product. Environments with high heat and humidity (read "your lungs") make them cure faster. It is not reversible. Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean it isn't there! Many hazardous chemicals don't have a smell.

If you choose to paint at home, consider your family and neighbors. If they're nearby, then they're being exposed too. Around here, many homes are built with a detached garage near the house with a covered walkway connecting the two. Paint fumes travel through this space and fill the house.

Maybe mild heart attack? Maybe endocarditis? Should go see a doctor anytime you have have persistent chest tightness/pain. Take an aspirin, too, just in case.

Here is some info from the HAMB board and a guy who painted for the first time, using what was thought to be the correct method and the problems with his health.

Re: How bad did i just hurt myself??

Your ok
If you can still post You should be ok. I worked in all kinds of plants. Cyanide Units (ROHN AND HAAS TX) Phosgene units,GE (IN) Chlorine units,DOW(TX,LA) Formaldehyde units,CELANESE (TX,LA) Heavy metals Lead and Nickel processing. MALLINCRODT (PA) Autotive Paint Mfg. BASF (CA)plants , Benzene Units(TX DOW), and more, I smoke cigarettes, paint cars, do body work. Had two heart attacks, two strokes , memory loss and I am still ok and alive and i am not 60 yet. I think I sell auto parts now I can't pass a FIT test

I was at the local Maaco Friday and an employee put his respirator on just to do a little sanding like 2 minutes on a car. I was proud of him.

One thing many people don't realize after spraying paint esp clear coat. Is after the booth clears and it looks fine. Just snap a photo and see the vapors that still come off the car.

Everyone should
Where a respirator (PPE) and read the labels and the MSDS on products. Be smart and safe. The human body can put up with a lot of abuse. Ask my
doctor Patel

What year is it? Who is the President? ADD 2+4+6? if you can answer you are ok
If you are still posting next month it will be ok

Sorry I got carried away
