Dual Tank problems

Okay so My truck did not come with the dual tanks but the previous owner installed it very proffesionally at first look, but if you go under the wiring is well... lets say not perfect and I was wondering if anyone could show by pictures. or a diagram of some sort how it is supposed to be because at the moment it is not operational I bought a new fuel selector valve, the button on the inside seems to be opperational it is always on the left tank rite now but if I switch it to the left the fuel gauge on my dash goes to empty which it is I could always throw some gas in it and see if it actually works. At the moment it run's from the fuse block to the switch to through the fire wall running down the left frame tied up with zip ties, crosses over near the middle of the drive shaft connects to the fuel selector valve then runs back up to the engine bay and very ghettoly to the wiring harness back into the fuse block on the engine side. and one last thing if I wanted to replace that wire entirely is it possible to take out of the fuse block or am i S.O.L? thanks guys

The Firewall Block connectors are Packard #56. They can be extracted from the firewall connectors if you are careful. The #56 connectors are common enough that you can buy them new from several online vendors.
This is a decent information page.
