Some questions....

So I've been pulling Bessie apart to fix a couple small things like oil and vac leaks and to put a new exhaust manifold on the passenfer side.

First off is the carb, while she runs ok, she is really rich and pulling air from the base plate so i fugured id replace the gasket. The carb is strange to me, its a factory 4brl Carter? the manifold has a carter pattern, but really small secondaries compared to my edelbrock 1406. It is definately not a Quadrabog. I cant seem to find a gasket for it...

I also Ran the casting numbers on the heads and block through Moretec and it came back as a 327 w/ camel hump LT1 heads. The motor is all original to the truck as far as I can tell. Is this a common engine? or did the Original Owner order up something special.

Also the engine has a cable hold down system that bolts to the frame, looks like OEM and is stout. I think that may be a factory add on to keep from breaking mounts? ANy advice and knowledge would be welcome.....

Re: Some questions....

The carb is a carter wcfb. First came out in the mid fifties. Small cfm, I think around 400 cfm and good for mileage. Shouldn't be hard to find a base gasket if you mention it's a wcfb.

Looks like a gasket for an older Rochester would fit that manifold. I got a kit for the carb on my '68 327 that should be the same.

Re: Some questions....

The cable is a factory fix/recall installed at a dealer.

327 was put into trucks. Not sure if it was optional or base. I think it was base for 4wd. As far as I know LT1 heads went on the 350 LT1. I diddn't think that they were actuall camel humps, I thouht they just had the same CC volume. Maybe the PO added them.

Re: Some questions....

327 was the optional big small block in 67 abd 68, never base model on any truck.
the heads were swapped on at some point. Even though people like to think it happened, they never 'accidently' installed hi-po stuff... esp in trucks.
the cable, as mentioned, was a recall fix. Motor mounts were snapping so GM took the cheap way out instead of retro fitting good mounts in place, they rigged cables in place.

Re: Some questions....

Thanks for the info gentlemen, answered all my questions in one post...

I think I'll keep the carb if I can get it running right, If not I've got a spare 1406 to plop on 'er. The cables are interesting and I'll probably keep 'em on just for nostalgia if nothing else.
