Gears, bearing, seals, labor
I am trying to compare ideas to reduce highway RPM and want help determining the cost to change gear sets back to the original 3.08:1 ratio in my 72 C-10. I suspect a PO put 3.73:1 gears onto the original 3-series carrier (because the code on the housing is correct for 3.08:1). If they didn't change the carrier I should be able to change the gear set out and use the existing carrier. I would probably order a complete kit including seals, bearings, gears and install kit. I am hoping to get good ball-park cost estimates to do this two ways. First price is if I do the work myself, and the second price if I have it done professionally. Lastly, if I need a carrier and opt for a new Eaton 3-series posi how much labor would the carrier change add if any?
Thanks! |

Re: Gears, bearing, seals, labor
A rough estimate is about $500 parts and labor to have it changed for you. If you go with the eaton posi of course it will be more.
You can use one of those online gear ratio calculators to get an idea of the rpm difference for each ratio and see how much rpm drop you will see from one to the other. I use www.richmondgear.com to compare.

Re: Gears, bearing, seals, labor
Here in Fort Walton Beach Florida, I ordered my gears and install kit from Summit for around $300, the shop that I called said they would charge about $400 for the install. A little more if they have to rebuild my stock carrier. And those numbers are as of yesterday.

Re: Gears, bearing, seals, labor
If you've never set up a rear end you need someone with the tools and know how to show you.You may have it apart several times to get it set right.
Check your local 4X4 shops since they do a lot of this stuff. The $$$ effective choice would be to find a 3;08 in a JY and swap it in.
