Steering Column for my '63 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

What is my best junkyard choice for replacing the clapped out column in my project truck? It does not have to be column shift, as I use a B&M mounted on the floor. Just looking for suggestions.

I like the looks of the 67-72 columns. They also don't have the ignition switch on the column. Not sure on how well they fit in 60-66 trucks but I use them in hot rods all the time. I dont like how the bulky 73-87 columns look with the ignition switch and how much larger diameter they are.

Yeah, a buddy of mine has a 91 suburban he uses for "storage" out in the woods on his property i am getting parts off of ( southern comfort seat like new ! ) , and the column has a ton of stuff I don't need or want on it.

I thought my column was shot on my 66 GMC. Turns out all I needed was an upper bearing- 16 bucks at the Truck Shop in Orange, Ca.

Pulled the wheel, put the bearing in and it's tight again.

You may not need to replace the whole column, They're very rebuildable.

My issue is more with the splines and threads. The wheel is actually loose on the splines, even though the spline count is correct. Almost as if someone tried to put the wrong wheel on it and ran it that way for a while. The threads are all but stripped to. I guess a trip to the salvage yard is in order. We have some good ones fairly close by. I may have to do a little cutting and welding, but no big deal, i'm used to doing that!
