Re: Who's got them 454??

These trucks did come with big blocks in them so if your going to order or buy a shroud,,, Just use 396 or 402 as an engine ,,,they have the same outside dimensions as a 454. You will need to know what other stuff you have though,,,ie, long/short water pump early or late mounting set up(looks like the right one for the truck) what fan you have and if your going to need spacers or not, if your engine is mounted in the forward or rear mounting position?

How will I know if the engine mounted in the forward or rear mounting position?
Sorry for the stupid questions but it was somebody else who installed this engine so i don't know.

I'll try to get pics of the two mounting positions tonight. My front wrap is off so it should be easy.

Re: Who's got them 454??

your fan is close enough that you won't find a shroud that'll fit, and in reality, its close enough it won't do a whole lot.
If you want it bad enough, it'll have to be custom made.

Re: Who's got them 454??

What I would do is do what I did on my race truck, I bought a shroud from here,

http://cmwraceparts.com/grp6B.php

Just trim it to fit, you may need to cut a lot off to get it to fit or you could also go with an electric fan. Some of the electric ones have a shroud built in.

Do you have pics of it installed on your truck? I'm afraid that will hit the alternator and the power steering pump on mine.
and i have only 3 inches of clearance between the WP and RAD.

Re: Who's got them 454??

With only 3 inches of clearance, very little is going to fit in there.

Is 2,500 cfm enough airflow for a big block? I have read on manufacturers' websites, like Permacool, that big blocks need more than that. I have the Black Magic M150 that flows more than 2,500 cfm and it barely does the job on my 396.

I really hope it works buddy! If it does I'll sure get one of those too so far I've tried one 16 inches 2500 cfm with a 12 inch on the side flowing 1300 cfm 3600 all together but, no shroud then I tried two 16'' 5000 cfm together but of course that one of them was kind of 4 inches out of the radiator fins and that was no good, and another thing is that the two 16 inches fan were bought cheap from e bay so I'm praying your setup works.

Re: Who's got them 454??

just curious, does any one know how many cfm a stock fan and shroud pull? Is it more the two duals pulling the 2500? The variable speed control running till cool down has to help vs a stock fan stopping when you kill the engine.

Re: Who's got them 454??

there is absolutly no point in running your fan after the engine is shut down. (talkin street, not drag) Electric fan, mechanical fan, they all shut off when you twist the ignition to off on a factory application becouse the engineers already know this. Every time I say this, I get all kinds of ppl on here saying electric fans stay on, however I think only one odd ball car does that, the rest, shut off with the ignition.
think about it for a second... the fan cools the coolant that is in the radiator, then that coolant goes and cools the engine. So if there is no water pump to push the coolant, then why put such a big load on the battery to cool off coolant, when it can't cool the engine?
Engineers may make things hard forr mechanics, but they generally know what they are doing. (with the exception of the ones who did the early 80's escort engine!)

Re: Who's got them 454??

I agree Longhorn man, there is no reason to keep cooling the coolant after the engine is shut off, but I know at least all of the cars I've owned newer than 2000 will keep the fan running. My current car runs HOT and likes to run those fans all the time, even when I'm walking away.

Re: Who's got them 454??

I've got a 454 in mine...running a factory style 4-core radiator, original GM big block fan shroud, and a stock 5-blade fan on a thermal fan clutch. In the heat of the summer here in Texas (it gets plenty hot here) running the AC it typically runs around 190-195....if I sit at idle for extended periods it will creep up in the 200-205 range...of course turning the AC off helps.

Re: Who's got them 454??

Hi there I am a new guy long time listener first time poster.

FLEX FANS are dagerous I had one blow I was passing a car and bang a nice dent in my hood sweet

Also I have a 454 with 10.2:1 compression and never really had problem I am using every thing that would have come on a stock 396/402. For a couple years I never a fan shroud It was never really a problem. If I would sit traffic on a super hot it mite creep up a bit.

My dad also has 402 in his with about 9.5:1 no problem either the cooling system is also stock.

Could you be running lean or to much timing.?

The stock shroud at the top mounting holes 28 3/4 and I measured my big block 78 burb and it was about 26 you mite be able to make one fit with some fabing I took a picture of my stock shroud and the burbs shroud. I see if I can get the pictures on.
