Power steering
When was power steering first available?
When did it become common? When did it become standard?

I'm assuming these are general questions.
I can't answer the "when it was invented" but you can google it and get several responses. The other questions don't have exact years since p.s. overlapped in a lot models between the years. A lot of us older guys can remember that before the 60's it was not common on most cars and certainly not in trucks. There's no exact years since there were literally hundreds of different models of cars and trucks by the same manufacturer that had p.s. and some that didn't. In the earlier years, say, before the 70's it was an option that you could order. I noticed power steering becoming more common in the 70's and probably standard in the late 80's and 90's. |

If you are talking about 67-72 Chevy trucks, the 67s had power assisted steering. They used the same control valve that was used on the 63-82 Corvette. In 68 they started using real power steering.

Yes I am thinking 67-72 Chevy trucks.
Was it common to havbe factory PS? And was it more common in 72 than 67/68?

The 67 and possibly 68 (not sure) used a ram assist. In 69 (?) GM went to the "normal" PS set up with a ps box onstead of a ram assist. I dont think PS became standard til 1988 (?) I have never seen a post 1988 truck without PS. 1973-1987 truck boxes will mount to the 69-72 frames, but GM changed to metric lines around 80-82 (?). 67, possibly 68 frame is different.
