Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

Ok bare with me here...

I have seen a lot of old cars and some trucks with headlight bulbs that look like chrome during the day. Is this a tint film or is the bulb made that way?

I would love to make my GMC's bulbs that way.

I'm a newb

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

Yeah there just covers. The ones I had were the half covers, made the bulb look chrome from a Distant. I belive it is an illusion becasue of the mirror effect and chrome meshing together. Heres a scanned picture of my old nova I used to own with the covers on the headlights.

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

well, you can get 'headlight covers' that go over the bulb. usually they cover just the top half of the bulb. some people call them headlight shades or eyebrows etc.

from top to bottom:
tri-bars
lucas(?) covers ( I always call them cats eye covers)
visors(usually sit out from thebulb)
half moon covers(usually sit almost flush with the bulb)

the tri bars are usually available with just plain chrome, or with a colored dot. the ones above have blue dots.

There's a good bit of variation on the covers and visors.
some visors go most of the way around the bulb, some don't, and the stick out different amounts.

I hope that's what you're looking for.

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

Awesome thank you for the info gentlemen. After looking I think that a eyebrow type setup over my four bulbs would look unique especially in my neck of the woods. My area loves Ford so my truck gets looks everywhere it goes and it's still in "project" status. It seems that I have reignited the love for Chevy/GMC trucks out here.

^ sorry don't have anything like it, other than the ones on my truck...

There's alot of vendors that sell them, I'd think some of the site supporting vendors sell them, you'd have to look at the vendor list:
here's the list of site supporting vendors:

also here's the links page with vendors.

Anybody that wants these you can get them from lmc, but it's in the early 50's ford catalog.

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

it does restrict quite a bit of light, and gives them another reason to pull you over. However, even on a daily driver, it is still ok-ish as far as light output.

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

I put them on mine I think they look pretty cool. I drove it night a couple of times and could see fine. They're less than 5 bucks at LMC, but only in the ford catalog.

Re: Headlight Bulbs that are Chrome?

Had the half-moon covers on my first car, but my eyesight was better in '64. So, now the thing is to get all the light I can from my lights and see all I can. The new LED headlights look interesting, so maybe a combination of LED headlights and the half-moon covers wouldn't cut too much of the visible light. What the upper part of the beam illuminates doesn't matter to me as much as what the lower part does, as long as I am driving on a road and not flying through the air.

When using the half moon style you can run your high beams at night without blinding oncoming traffic.

No because the bottom half of the lamp reflects up and the top half reflects down so your brights would project right into the oncoming drivers face.
