Should I keep original parts? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This is not a for sale thread. What I want is opinions about the parts I am changing on my truck. Should I keep the originals or sell them? I have a stock 6 cylinder radiator, a set of blue seat-belts and a almost new bench seat, and the stock springs. I don't have the original engine nor transmission. Part of me says keep them and then part of me says sell them.. What does everyone else do ?

FWIW, if you have the storage space available; keep them, IMHO.

As an example, I replaced most of my front end sheet metal because of "T-bone" collision damage. My right front fender wasn't hurt very bad, but it had the usual rust out under the battery box, so I just replaced it when I had everything opened up
A friend of mine had collision damage on his right front fender, but the area under the battery was good.
I gave him my fender & he took his + mine to make 1.
It'll all even out in the end.

I agree 100% if you have the room keep them. We threw away all kinds of tri-5, muscle car parts away years ago. Even threw away running 409's and stuff like that. Stock air cleaners? ah chuck it. Look at the prices now. Granted the market for these trucks may or may not go as crazy as muscle cars but look what has happned in the last 20 years to them. We throw good parts away and offer them to people that never show up. We can't keep them so the dumpster it goes. I hate to do it.

you know better than that!! my truck is nothing but parts that where too good to throw away but not good enough for that project I was working on...ok maybe I would toss the springs..well at least in the pile with mine...lol...

When I first got my truck 25 years ago I started to fix it up. I got a cheap stereo and threw away my original Delco AM radio. Then I bought a Cal Classics 14" air cleaner and threw away the GM one. In retrospect, I am so sorry I did that because I want to make my truck stock looking and I need those items back, especially the Delco radio.

i have kept more parts than i should...they always come in handy somewhere down the road...

I kept my old aluminum trim, front springs, painted side mirrors & front bumper, points ignition, rear window, AM radio.... ahhhhh okay, I'm a packrat.

Keep 'em if you have room. Might make good tradin stock some day....

Some parts you may want to keep. Look at the condition and whether you think you may use it in the future. But, if you're sure you won't use it, why not put it up for sale and help someone else that may be looking for the part.

I agree with the above that we threw away a lot of parts that now wish we hadn't, but most of the ones I threw away went to the metal scrap yards. In your case you can make a little money and help a fellow enthusiast.

btw: how much you want for the blue seat belts... just kidding.

i personally dont care to store junk for real long periods of time/ if i can't see myself using somethging in the near future and unless it's very rare i'd rather just clear it out by either tossing or getting a bit of money to use on my projects

If its wearable or easily replaceable, scrap it and get a couple bucks to reinvest. I have a pile of metal (springs, drums, old tie rods, control shafts, power booster, etc.)

dam wish I had a few of those AM radios that where junk or even some 8 track players...unless you have a cystal ball who knows what anything is going to be worth in a couple years...gas could be $4 a gallon...oh wait that already happened
