What wire cuts off the annoying beeeeping noise?

I just got the steering column in the truck,$50.00 bucks from huff's auto in Indiana. I got all of the wires and bolts installed and relocked down, now I got this annoying buzzing noise like when you put the key in and you know you left the lights on. I cant figure it out why it is doing that, so my question is now how do I get the buzzing noise to go away? Any insight will be helpful.

Don't know what year your truck is, but check out the "Weird New Habit" post a few posts down the page. There are some instructions that may be applicable to your situation.

As for getting rid of the noise....getting rid of the beeper may be the answer.

The buzzer is under the dash by your left foot kind of. It's just a black plastic box with a little round grill on it. You could pull that but you will lose all of your warning buzzers like the headlights on, etc.

I had the same problem with mine and it was the key cylinder and the key in ignition warning. I fiddled with it when I had the steering wheel off to change the wiper switch. I think there was a metal piece that contacted the cylinder I either took off or bent so it wasn't touching anymore. It's been a while and I'm drawing a blank on what I did exactly.

I'm sorry the truck is an 1988 GMC 3/4 ton pick up, it has a tilt column, if that helps any. If there are any more questions, please don't be afraid to ask. But i will look for the black box, i have to disconnect the battery so the damn buzzer doesn't kill it. But thanks for the reply so far

The key switch has a white tab on it that contacts a small brass tab which connects to the buzzer circuit, the tab is bent, touching metal or the white plastic tab is worn down enough for the brass tab to touch metal, removing this brass tab will keep the key buzzer from buzzing. Remove the ignition cylinder to do it.

The switch for the buzzer is the most common problem I have seen for the problem you are having.

It is #19 in the photo at this link:

As LocknKey said, you will need to remove the ignition cylinder, which requires pulling the steering wheel, lock plate and turn signal switch to get to it.

Here are some steering column sites with photos that tell how to repair loose tilt columns. The photos should be helpful to do what you need to do.
