New truck finally, couple questions
I finally went and bought a '70 3/4 ton 4x4, It has a 383 with roughly 30000 miles on it since it was rebuilt, and a 350 tranny that seems to shift smoothly. Everything is pretty straight, but has rust on both front fenders, which I am going to buy new fenders to fix. I got it for $2500 which I thought was a decent deal. Runs pretty good. The owner drove it to Arkansas and back last year with out problem.
The problem: after you shut off the motor, it is hard to restart. I have to turn it over for a little while and pump the gas pedal and eventually it starts. Runs good after that. The carb is a new edlebrock. Any ideas? And the pics: |

Sweet truck! And a great price. Try the timing, sounds good to me.

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
Couple more questions:
I think the truck was advertised as a '71, but when I got home and actually looked at the pink, it is a '72. I am not familiar with any of the models. It has bdges that say custom 20 I believe. Is this right? Also, what axles and is there any way to tell what gear ratio it has? Thanks, Jesse |

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
Looks like a 72 to me judging by the door panels and mirror.
Custom 20 is a 3/4 ton truck so that is correct. Nice truck, that's a helluva front bumper.

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
Do you have headers? Maybe your starter is over-heating. If it starts great cold and only hard to start after you have been driving, you may need to put a heat shield or wrap on the starter.

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
Which carb do you have?
Sounds like to me like the bowl is bleeding off. Try running some lucas oil fuel system cleaner through it. Make sure you run Super Unleaded too. With that motor your timing should be around 10 degrees at 1000rpm idle with the vacum line off the distributor and plugged. Last edited by highperf4x4; 10-09-2009 at 12:22 AM. |

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
I decided to drop the truck off at a local shop and have them look at it. One of the bolt holes in the head for the headers were stripped out and I didn't want to tackle it. He fixed that, put in new header gaskets, adjusted the carb and timed it. Sounds and runs good now.
I am getting new wheels and tires later this week and also getting the bed Line-x'd. I'll make sure to take some pictures when its done. Another question, you can kinda see from the pictures that the front is lower than the rear, about 1 1/2 inches. The rear has about a 2 1/2 block for the lift. The front springs are flattened out with age and that heavy bumper and winch. How would I go about picking new springs to try and level the truck out? What company? Thanks again, Jesse |

Re: New truck finally, couple questions
You might try over in the 4WD section - those guys are pretty good with those kind of questions. All we try to do over here is lower 'em. Very nice truck, BTW.
