Painting pulleys - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi All,

I want to clean up and reuse my pulley's for the water pump, crank pulley and power steering pulley. The problem is they are a little beat on looks but function just fine. Has anyone tried to paint their pulleys and if so how did you do it, any special paint? I know Ican just replace them with aluminum but I'm on a budget.

I would think you would be able to scuff them and shot them with some Krylon or something like that. That is what I would try. I don't think you are going to need any special paint for that. Good luck and have fun.

I just clean them up to metal with a bench wire wheel. Prime and use Dupli-color #1634 engine black. I absolutely love the sheen for engine accessory parts, between semi-gloss black and flat. It is an engine paint so it is high heat. Here is a photo of my engine, brackets and power steering pump are the 1634, pulleys are Dupli-color semi- black, I ran out and wanted to get it installed.

Another really good satin black that is very close to a GM factory black for under the hood is a Rustoleum 7777. You can get it a Walley World, Lowes, Home Depot etc. It has a picture of lawn furniture on the can. Looks very factory. About $5.00 a can.

Well I don't know about that, pulleys are going to set me back $300+ and as far as a show truck, it's a crusier for me, yes I want it ot look good but I don't have the cash to spend on a set of pulleys that will sit under the hood and only seen at car shows. Maybe down the road I might but not now

i painted mine with satin black bbq grill paint. the look great and it has a temp rating of 1400 degrees. cost 4 buck for a can of paint at k mart.

I just picked up a can of semi gloss black engine paint, cleaned the pulleys and hit them with a few coats, that look pretty good and for less then $10 I can't go wrong

That really looks good Orrie, thanks for the info. I've used Ace hardware satin black and it's ok but that looks better.

Aluminum pulleys are nice looking if you are going for that look but for the price difference I'll stay with the painted steel on the 71.

I did see a nice shiny aluminum pulley on the side of the highway the other day with the center broken out of it though. The guy who lost it left it where it rolled after it fell out of the car. I stopped where I saw it to pick it up on the way back an someone else had picked it up. Some of the aluminum pulleys you see now are rather suspect in quality.

I've gone with Hammerite and was pleased. They have standard colors w/o the funky hammered finish. Stronger than your regular bomb can paint.
