Rear end and brake wear help
I swaped to 5 lug disc brakes on mine 69 c10. Today I took the axles to machine shop. While rear is apart I inspected it. Spider gears have some strange wear. Looks like a wood warm groves. Is that a normal wear?
Rear brake parts were replace 4000 miles ago. New drums, wheel cylinders, hose, hardware and shoes. Shoes have a lot of heat cracks and missing chunks. What's a problem here? Maybe it's a new material they use to make them now? I have a lifetime warranty on all these brake parts. Axles seals and bearing are ok, no leaks. Should I replace them while it's apart? I am afraid to replace them with less quality parts that are available out there. |

It's a little hard to tell from that angle, but that spider gear doesn't look good to me. All of the teeth on it should look like the other spider gear that you can see the edges of the teeth on. The shoes don't look bad in the picture but it may be misleading. A few heat cracks may not be a problem but if there are any chunks missing it could mean that the linings are not bonded well to the metal. I can't really see any pieces missing except some small chips along the edge of the lining. LockDoc

Re: Rear end and brake wear help
Truck had 91k miles when I got it. PO was station all over the place. Last time it was station in Hawaii for 2 years. Maybe it did seat for too long. I put 6000 hard miles on it.
I took some better pics, my camera focus dosn't work anymore so I have to focus it by hand. |

I agree with this. Sometimes when in storage for a long time the rust will form at the gear oil line on the gear. Rust can look like a worm pattern sometimes. I wouldn't worry about it unless they are severily pitted or missing surface areas. As for the seal, get some timkin or AC delco seals.
