steering column shaft movement

Dummy me. In my previous question about this I had asked about the column movement. Should have said the inner shaft has movement(not the column).
Here it is again if anyone can help.
.....I just put a different steering wheel on and I've noticed when I pull the wheel towards me, I have about 3/8 to 1/2 inch movement. I never paid any attention to this before because I've never pulled on the wheel. Is this normal? Is there a way to stop this(other than don't do it)?.....

I've tried making a couple of shims out of 3/4 inch flat washers. Seems a little too tight for my likings. How much play should the shaft have?

It's been awhile but, I think if you loosen the clamp at the base of the column (under the hood) and loosen the brackets under the dash, you should be able pull the column (not the shaft) up into the cab to take up the play, then tighten bolts.

May those who love us, love us, any of those who do not love us, may God turn their hearts.
And if God is unable to turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles so we may know them by their limping.

A man who works with his hands is a laborer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist.
