71 door locking problems

Does anyone have any tips on adjusting the door locks or striker plates. My 71's doors will lock with doors open, but if the door is shut they will not lock at all. Any help would be appreciated. The doors body lines appear correct on the outside, so the door doesn't look like it needs adjusting.

It's old school man,You have to manually lock them with your key when they're closed.

Um, that's funny! I was having the same problem just the other day. I found that I had to push in on the door as I turned the key to lock the doors. It seems that no matter how much the striker plates are adjusted, the new weather stripping has not been compressed enough.

By the way, you need to fire up the Suburban and head down to the coast with us or with Nathan Saturday!! Give me a call.

Re: 71 door locking problems

Yeah I have to push my passenger door in to lock it. But it did it even before I installed the new weather stripping. Now it's just worse. I don't know where to adjust it but it's inside the door somewhere. I know my driver side door doesn't do it.

Had a similar issue. I was having trouble turning the key with the door open or closed. I sprayed a little lube in the key hole. I also took the lock knob on the inside off and sprayed a little down there too. Worked like a champ for me. Hopefully yours is just as easy.

That didn't help me. I tried it. It just makes it easier to push the door in to make it lock. In fact, if you bring the strike plate out far enough, the door will pull itself in when I turn the key so I don't actually have to push on it. Obviously I can't leave it that way or the door will rattle and something is still not right. I'm not sure what the cause is. I wouldn't think the passenger side latch would be that worn out but not the driver's side. So, I'm assuming something inside needs to be adjusted. I just haven't looked at it to see what. If you have any idea about what to mess with on the inside, I'd appreciate that info.

Re: 71 door locking problems

That was a funny post, Dean. Cant make it to CTC, finishing up my sons bed instead.
I forgot to add to the post that I also have a 1970 chevy truck and I added power door lock actuators to it with a alarm and didnt have any trouble with the locks locking after the door was shut. I am wanting to do the same with this project.
