now this is COOL !!!
we have a couple car get together places here in phoenix. one at the pavillions (snobsdale people/people that had SOMEONE ELSE build their car/truck ) and then 83rd ave/beardsley (people who are building their own rigs the way they want)
this wheel is hand made (after about 6 tries) and sits inside a GMC (i think its a gmc but either way its a 67-72 truck) he has some other wood parts in the cab also. Last edited by QKENUF4U; 09-17-2006 at 05:46 PM. |

Re: now this is COOL !!!
I remember in the 80's in hot rod magazine, there was a street rod where the whole body was made of wood.
Interesting... kinda stupid IMO... but it was interesting. (yeah, the 80's were THAT boring) |

nice craftsmanship ... too bad it was used on a steering wheel instead of a nice coffee table.

Re: now this is COOL !!!
being from a wood craftsman background (my dad has been a custom cabinet builder for 60+yrs now) heres a website i made up of his work......
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/qkenf4.../ph//my_photos i see no reason that wouldnt be safe. its laminated and glued so it would be pretty dam strong. now if ya ram your chest into it from a accident and it splintters i can see ya haveing problems OUCH ! you should see the bed in this truck also (just like the other nicely done beds on here) |

Re: now this is COOL !!!
The reason it wouldn't be safe is because in a front-end collision, instinct makes you put both hands on the wheel and stiffen your arms and when you collide all your strength plus your weight will collapse the wheel. Have you ever noticed how sterring wheels are angled outward toward the driver. It's for strength for the above reason. Check out some head-on wrecked vehicles next time you go to a junkyard and look at the steering wheels. It ain't pretty!
Other the other hand, that is nice work.

Re: now this is COOL !!!
They did a great job. Not my cup of tea. Not because of the safety issue, but because it looks like it should be on a boat, not a truck.
