Re: Paint or Power Coat?

Guys, powdercoat is repairable when you get chips.

Have your coater give you a small medicine bottle full of powder. When you get a chip in the coat, mix a small bit of the powder with MEK to make a thick slurry and dab it on with a Q tip. It's fixed. The MEK chemically links the powder.

I use the lid off of a spray can to mix it in. A dab of powder, a few drops of MEK, stir it up and dab it on.

Re: Paint or Power Coat?

Andy, you know where I am coming from with the powdercoat cheerleading. It is not a perfect process, or even the best process sometimes, but it is the future. The EPA is trying hard to put paint shops out of business. Solvents, isocyanates, and all of those methyl-ethyl killyas in paint are on their hit list. Powdercoating is going to keep growing and improving because it is so eco-friendly for the end user like myself.

Re: Paint or Power Coat?

I sandblasted, shot rusto primer for rusty metal,x2 coats and rusto semi-flat black x2 coats, on mine, some will say you need to use catalized paint, but plenty have taken this route too.
I finished my truck up on mothers day this year, I have put 2000 miles on it since, it seems to be holding up well. Not much gravel or rain driving yet tho, she is my baby after all! I'll let you all know how it fares in the storage unit for the next 4 years I bet my rusto will hold up under these harsh conditions!
I know nothing of powdercoating, other than putting it on jigheads for fishing, and they hold up well.

A quart if you don't waste any. It goes a long way.

Re: Paint or Power Coat?

If memory serves, this is like 1/2 a quart on here...

I did this in 06 or 07 and with the exception of where the leaf springs pivot and slide, it is all still there after lots of neglect and salt.
Kev, you do point out some good points.

Re: Paint or Power Coat?

IMO KBS frame kit all the way. I've used POR-15, rustoleum, and powdercoat and nothing compares to my KBS. Its super tough, you can take a hammer to it and it wont scratch, you brush it on and all the brush marks flow right out, and it's cheap, ($55) Best part when you buy the kit? You don't even have to sandblast.

Just my $.02

Just my $.02 Oh and you can get it in lots of colors including gloss OR satin black, silver, red, green, off white, etc.

I've talked to many people who have used KBS vs POR-15 and all of us agree that the KBS is like POR-15 on steroids. The POR-15 is fine and all but you have soooo much more prep work (proper temps etc). With KBS you just open the garage door, first you spray on the cleaner and let it sit 15 minutes, then you spray on the rustblast and let it sit 15 minutes and then you put two coats of the frame paint! It's just like heaven in a kit IMO. Just check it out at least.

Re: Paint or Power Coat?

Methyl Ethyl Ketone- it's a solvent available at any hardware store, Home Depot, Walmart, etc. It will be on the shelf next to the paint thinners.

Thanks Man! You rock!!! I'm in the early stages of a trailer queen project. I will definately give that chip repair a try at some point. With all the time invested, i'm sure one or two chips will drive me crazy. Its good to know you can repair them.

It goes a very long way. If you spray it, you can thin 20%. I recently did my frame with less than 1 quart.
