is a 700r4 4x4 tranny any good?
I got done redoing the flywheel and the torque converter on my 88' GMC and was looking at the transmission, the guy that was helping me said that he has a better one for me if I would want to trade up. I told him I would think on that cause the one I got now isn't giving me any trouble, so my question is should I save this tranny or trade up for I think he said a alison 1000 something or other, so don't quote me on the type I may be wrong.

The 700 is a good trans in my opinion. They like to gear hunt but other than that I like em. As for the trade we need more info those allisons take alot of torque to make them work right. Unless you got a big block or diesel it might not be worth your time.

In my years at the GM stealership, not many guys liked those trannys.
They are ok,depending what you want to do with them. If you are going to build them up to see any kind of power, your money is better spent on upgrading to a 4L80E in my opinion. If your buddy does have an allison 1000,that is another ball game. Those came in the 06 and up GM trucks. Still need a stand alone computer set up for them as they are completley electronic control. They weigh a ton and are $$$ if you have to repair,But a hell of a tranny. |
