i have an 87 r20 longbed pickup
most have 20 gallon tanks.56 in. long.

my guestion is are some 16 gallon tanks also 56 in. long and not 43 in.?

I parted out a 87 1/2 ton. It had dual 16 gallon tanks w/very long fuel filler necks. Actually had a metal pipe between two rubber hoses (ends). I thought it was odd for it to have those dual small tanks in there.

It could be either GVW restricted (because of the weight of the fuel) or engineering may have decided that for your powertrain combination 2 16 gallon tanks acheived the range they wanted.
