Use the same procedure as a V-8 to find top dead center.

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
the cap is not like a regular cap it has the plug wires on the side of the cap not the top 3 on the drivers side and 4 on the passenger side 1 of the 4 is the coil wire the website you sent me is for a regular cap this is a 4.3 vortec motor with computer timing not one you set your self the computer sets the timing on the motor i know how to set a normal distibutor i need a diagram for this type

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
Yea, the cap has the wires coming out the side. However, the cap only reroutes the current for rotation and side spark plug wire routing. Either way, the #1 pistion at TDC still points to the #1 cylinder like the older and small cap HEIs. Setting the timing is still identical. You can even use the mark on the harmonic balancer as a verification.

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
I dont think you can use the marks on the harmonic balancer for verifacation on these, Im in the process of doing the heads on my 95 4.3 and when I have the marks lined up the piston is way off top dead center. There are two marks but neither one work. and there isnt really a timming mark on the timming chain cover. Ive set the piston to top dead center and the dist. between 2 + 4 hopefully it will work

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
Firing order on cap is as follows On pass. side of cap its 2 , 4 , 6 ,Coil wire on oppisite side its 3 , 1 , 5 so on drivers side the #1 plug is in the middle (On the distributor).

If you turn the cap over you will see it actually fires between #2 + #4

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
i put it between 2and 4 and it won't start i replaced the module it sounds like it wants to fire up but it's still off time or something i'm wondering if the distributor cam sensor is bad or if it jumped the chain there is a mark on the distributor looks like a #6 thats where i put the rotor between 2 and 4 #1piston TDC and nothing

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
from what i can figure out the 6 is so you can tell the 6 cylinder from the 8 cylinder distributor and i think it's where the rotor button is suppose to face on the distributor as for the arrow in the front of the distributor i have not seen it thats what i think but not sure

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
the pointer with the "6" on it is the correct position for #1.
you have to make sure its cyl. #1 thats on TDC, and not #4??? they share the same crank position (TDC marks aligned on balancer to timing cover), but its the camshaft position that determines which is actually firing. if you just rotated the balancer mark to the timing cover, and didnt verify which cylinder was firing, you may have to rotate the dist. rotor 180 deg., to #4 to get things right... thats what i did and it fired right up |

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
Guys?? Please?? If any of you get an email about my reply here? Please let me know i've been stuck on this distributor poblem for three days and nights now. I need some experienced help. I can't seem to find a crabk position and or distributor spot that fires the plugs. I have spark, have fuel, have alot. Just don't understand what the heck is wrong here. Had issues dropping it in on the number 6 inside the distributor cap but got it right before the number 6 like within a quarter inch of the arrow. Please anyone out there?

Re: 96 s10 blazer 4.3 won't start
AutoZone has alldata. they have a procedure for this. unless you follow it you might as well throw the dist. in the glovebox.
have them look it up under powertrain management ingition system service and repair distributor installation BTW, I remove the factory limiter for dist. rotation and install a dist. clamp for a Chevy small block. but here is the clincher. you NEED a scan tool to set the cam retard. specs are 0* +- 2* @ 1000 RPM |
