best way to remove a cab???

working on this 53 that is on a S-10 chassis. well long story short i have to undo what someone else did and fix it. so the body needs to completely come off the frame. i already removed the bed, front cap and hood. loosened the cab from the frame, but that sucker is HEAVY! truck is painted so id like to remove the cab as smoothly as possible. any ideas???

might be to much for just two guys with the doors still on the cab. might get 3 more of your biggest buddies over there to give you a hand? or remove the doors that way you only have to buy enough pizza for just one hand

Not sure how far you want to take the cab down, but my brother and I took a 54 cab off the frame by ourselves with no problem. But, it was a stripped down cab; no doors, glass, steering, interior, pedals, wiring, etc. We just took two 8' landscape timbers, slid them thru the door openings, put one end on each shoulder, stood up straight and walked it off. I was surprised how easy it was.

On post #28 of that thread 1-ton of fun made a really neat contraption out of 2x4 wood. I actually copied his design to use on my 53 S-10 swap, which I haven't started yet, but the cab lift is ready to go when I start it.

so today ill remove the doors and see how it feels. if its too heavy still ill look into building that wood support and use my cherry picker as per the link post 28. thanks!!!

I would get 3 friends and don't remove the doors. Less work to do.

easiest way......build a cab hoist and use and engine hoist. 1 man operation.

that cab is HEAVY like in capital letters! doors each have 6 bolts, ill remove them in minutes. plus this truck has a/c glass and steering column so every bit will help. ill still get 3 friends though so i can supervise, ahaaha.

how are the door gaps on your truck? If there are good leave the doors on. It sux to gt them lined back up. I left my on because my gaps were perfect and my door latches were smooth. Just a thought to save you time and headache later.

rhodog77 that is one slick setup! tyler if your cab is painted glue some carpet to the top of cradle to protect it. i see you used plankets that seem to be working great.

Maybe I just don't see it but what keeps the wooden bracket from tipping?
Is the cab just balanced on the end of the hoist?

The weight of the cab keeps it from sliding. You door have to find the balance point though. I put some 2 by 4 stops on the end of mine just in case it wanted to slide but I never had a problem with wanting to slide or tip.

Here's how I did mine, several times (by myself), but I don't think I'd do this with a painted cab. 2 2x6's and my cherry picker.
