Power Steering?
I just bought a 68 c10 custom for more parts (this makes my 4th truck...wife is getting a little growly) and it has an odd set up for power steering. It appears to have a manual steering box, the power steering box is not hooked to the steering box or sector whatever you want to call it, they run around the steering box and hook into a hydralic cylinder. This cylinder is hooked to the drag link which has a third mounting hole in it on the passenger side (one for the inner tierod end, one for the idler arm, and the last for this cylinder). Is this some type of add on power steering system for these trucks, or is this the way the power steering was on 68? The other trucks are power steering also, but none like this one. Just curious, never seen this set up before, I can't get photos to load up at this moment or I would post some of this.

Re: Power Steering?
Sounds like what came on the '67s. I've never seen one, but that's kinda how I've heard them described.

Re: Power Steering?
67's and early 68's had this set up. Commonly called a ram assist, it is the nonintegral power assist.
They leak like crazy, and did it from day one. Vettes used it for a long time, and if I'm not mistaken, the chevy vega/monza cars used this too. |

Re: Power Steering?
Okay thanks for the info....just had me wondering, I have a couple 71's and a 69, but none of those look anything like the set up on the 68. I was wondering if it was a factory set up or if some kind of aftermarket add on power steering. It is very odd, when you rev the motor, the steering wheel turns from side to side...lol. And yes it appears to be leaking like a sieve! I guess more parts to add to the scrap iron pile!

Re: Power Steering?
I wouldn't scrap it. Some people are still looking for those.

Re: Power Steering?
Heck, before trashing it, you might see if you can sell it on ebay. There just might be some nut out there looking for one of those things. OR, you could just hang it on the wall in your garage and ask everybody that comes over.... "I bet you can't guess what that is?"

Re: Power Steering?
I have found a fix for this. Just keep buying trucks until the wife explodes then sell one truck.
