Time for tires - need opinions!

It's time to replace the BFG All Terrain T/A's on my '70 1/2T 2wd. Since the truck is long since retired from hauling wood, I have picked up and powder coated some 4X4 ralleys and am looking at Radial T/A's. I'm trying to decide between 275/60's and 255/60's. Any opinions on what would look the best ? Pics perhaps? BTW, I have front drums, and it's stock height.

--Oh yes, I found in test fitting the front wheels this weekend that I had to grind off the powder coating from around the center hole because they would become "press-fit" to the hub and not want to come off ! I had to take the whole drum/wheel assembly off and drive the drum off with a 2x4 and hammer.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

60 seems like a pretty low profile if you're keeping it stock height. But to each their own. In terms of brands, do your research on some of the off-brands. Many of them are made by the big names and cost a fraction of what the Michelin's, etc might run you.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

My suggestion would be 255/70/15 with the stock height. I personally think 275/60's look a tad short on these trucks.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

I agree with 68stepbed. 255/70/15 looks great on 15x8. I believe they are 29" whereas the 275/60 ic 28". JMO.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

I went with 255/79-15 on Rallys. They look good though my truck ia lowered 2 1/2-4.I went with the T/A's because I had them on my DD and really liked the way they ride and how quiet they are.My local tire store sold me 2 255's and 2 235's for $417.00 mounted balanced and out the door.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

I have BFG Radial Long Trail T/A's on my 2wd and really like how they ride. They're also quiet and seem to be wearing really well.

I also put a set of BFG Rugged Trail T/A's on my 2000 Z71 and I'm really happy with them as well. They're quiet, they're wearing very well, and they've done well for me in both mud and snow. They have over 20,000 miles on them and based on tread wear, 50K wouldn't surprise me.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

Thanks for all the replies!

After looking at pictures, pictures, pictures, and reading all I could find on the subject, I decided to go with the 275/60's. I think they look the best on the rallys, and they are just a tad shorter than the 235/75's that were on there.

I'll post pics this weekend in between rain showers.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

been running 255/70/15's and provides a great profile for the truck. Sits well, fills the wells up nicely but not too tight and seems to be a popular fit with many others I've read about. Check out discounttires2go. If you want something fairly inexpensive. Shipping will get you but the tires are affordable.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

IMO, 255-60 is too small and doesn't fill up the wheel wells. It's actually shorter than a 235-70.

On a 70-72, the 275-60 will work fine on the rear, but may rub the fender in the front, depending on wheel offset and the truck's height.

If you have a Discount Tire store nearby, they will mount multiple sizes and let you decide.

I know it's not cool, but my 69 C-10 has 255-70 Radial T/As on 8" rally wheels all around. They are roughly the same height as the old pickup truck standard -- the 235-75x15.

Re: Time for tires - need opinions!

I have a 68 stepside 2wd and I run a 235/70/15 in the front and a 275/60/15 in the rear. I think it looks great. They are the same height but a lot wider in the rear.
