Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

Hi all,
I need to order a couple of steering universals, support bearing, and shaft for either a Z or raised crossmember (havent decided which yet) and have them sent over to me in New Zealand.

I have an 82 c10 with power steer etc, anyone have any proven part numbers for the flaming river gear or better suggestions, I need to get the order right and their website is low on info.

Thanks

Count the splines on the steering column shaft and the gear box shaft and I'll set you up with some part numbers. I don't remember how many splines each one is.

Re: Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

Thanks,
For the vital info Ive got 3/4 x 30 at the box and 1" double d at the column, so I was looking at a kit like the FRUJKT5 with 22" shaft and joints, then just add a support bearing .

Individual P/ns I get are FR1717DD for the splined end, and FR1733DD for the column end.

What would your advice be on finish? Ill end up painting or coating it probably, is it worth coughing up for the stainless ? And any advice as far as vendors go ? summit seems like the way forward, $160 for the kit above.

Any advice is much appreciated, Ill probably go with the sectioned crossmember then look at shifting the components up like you did on yours, which is a sick build and Ive been following closely.

Thanks

Sorry NZSquare, don't mean to hijack your thread but i'm in search of the same set up as you for my '87. What is the exact information i need to know to order these same parts for my truck, anyone?

Re: Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

Well from what I understand most GM vehicles after 78 went to 30 spline, 3/4" on the steering box, and have 1"DD columns. So you need the shaft between and most companies seem to go with 3/4" DD so thats what I ordered, and the support bearing.

This is all Im told I need for the raised crossmember, which is only moving the upper arms in relation to the steering shaft, where as if youve got a Z, yourre moving the steering box aswell so need to correct for that, in which case Im guessing 2 universals will be all you need.

Time will tell whether or not I need to run 3 universals, if so its only another 3/4" to 3/4" DD.

I hope this makes sense as when I read it back to myself it doesnt really.

Re: Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

I have a 2.5" Z now and the steering just clears when laid out. But i also have a sectioned crossmember that i am gonna install soon so i will need 3 joints. This picture is of someone else's truck (i don't remember who, hope ya don't mind), which i plan to do the same.

So as like you i just need to know what part numbers or whatever i need. Who sells the best parts? Where is the best place to buy from? I know flaming river sells them, but are really pricey.

Re: Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

I ordered all my kit off Scotts Hot Rods above, very painless and good prices.

He sent Unisteer kit which Im unsure of the P/n's of but the flaming river numbers are above.

I dunno if youvve seen smashingchucks build but he moved the steering box and idler up with the crossmember section, looked real slick and would help with clearance etc.

Re: Steering universal p/ns for Z etc.

so, just to double check. Assuming that my column is 1" DD and the steering box is 3/4" - 30 (i will check this later) then i would need:

1 - 1" DD x 3/4" DD joint
1 - 3/4" DD x 3/4" DD joint
1 - 3/4" DD x 3/4" - 30 joint
1 - 3/4" support bearing
1 - length 3/4" DD shaft

I think thats right?
