81-87 chevy c10 owners

OK - tried all the websites that were suggested here. I still cannot find a rear stepside fender with the fuel tank door on the drivers side. I did some research and I believe that the c10 had the fuel tank on the passenger side from 73-80. Then from 81-87 they switched it over to the drivers side. And from browsing pictures here, I have seen a few trucks with the fuel door on the drivers side. Has anyone that has owned a c10 between 81-87 ever had to replace a drivers side fender with the fuel door? If so, do you remember where you bought it? Thanks!!

the LMC Catalogue lists round and square applications for stepside bed fenders I would call them and ask sometimes the catalogue is ambiguous

Re: 81-87 chevy c10 owners

I did check lmc truck - along with brothers, jcwhitney, mar-k, classicchevyparts, americanclassicparts , autopartsfinder, and about 2 dozen others i found by googling the part. NO ONE has them! That is why I am hoping someone who owns the same style truck may have already figured out where to go. I am stumped. I even went to my local chevy dealership today to see if chevy possibly might have any NOS parts in a warehouse somewhere - no such luck. Everyone has passenger fenders with and without the fuel hole, but only drivers side fenders without it. Which just doesn't make sense because it was such a wide span of years that the truck was manufactured that way. I have gone to all our local junkyards, been scouring craigs list and e-bay - nothing! I'm really starting to get bummed out. The truck is coming off the road in 2 weeks for the winter and i have a set budget to get the bugs worked out (carb needs rebuilt, spring kit for drums, body work, discs and rotors changed out, tires rotated and aligned and new gauges, wiring harness, speedo cable, and dash panel installed). I really want to get that new fender put on and i just can't afford to have someone retrofit a fender without the fuel hole - funds are already strained to the max with the necessary stuff. If anyone has purchased this fender, i would truly appreciate it if you could let me know where!!!

Re: 81-87 chevy c10 owners

Why not just replace the fender with one with no fuel door?

You can cut the filler hose so that you would access it from inside the fender (wheelhouse area). Just a "stub" straight section of hose with the end and the cap installed in line with the vehicle centerline (rather than making a 90 degree turn to interface with the fender).

It would be a much cleaner installation (and a "custom" touch) to have no fuel doors on either side.

If I add a second tank to my truck that's how I would do it.

FWIW -

Actually, the fuel tank switch from passenger to drivers is kind of moot: since dual tanks could be ordered they would have filler doors on both sides.

Which sort of reinforces your point that they should be readily available....

Re: 81-87 chevy c10 owners

I love the idea of not having the fuel filler door at all!! Thank you so much for that suggestion. Even if I did find a used fender now, what would i do if i ever needed one again due to an accident or something. Now if i cut the filler hose down, i must need some piece to put on the end of the hose to screw the cap into? Is it totally safe to do it that way? My kids love riding in the "hot rod" and they're with me all the time, so I just gotta make sure. Does it have to be secured to something else? Thanks again! You just got rid of the pounding headache I have had for weeks!

Re: 81-87 chevy c10 owners

Ah - you're welcome!

I'd cut the existing fill hose down so that there was a short section of straight hose remaining. There is a smaller vent hose that would need to be cut a similar amount.

Take your existing (silver metal) hose end and stick that in the freshly cut hose. The cap would screw into that. If it seems too floppy you could perhaps even make a small clip to secure it to the pencil brace in that area.

The only downside that I see is that occasionally mud or dirt would get kicked up onto the cap in that location. You'd need to be careful to wipe it or rinse it off before refueling.

Re: 81-87 chevy c10 owners

If I were to go the inside fender filler,I've thought about it, I would go to the junkyard and cut the filler door and a little surrounding metal outt of something with a mashed up quarter panel, then weld that to the pencil brace. should solve the issue of mud/dirt.
