will at 73-78 stepside bolt to a 79 frame?

It should since the frames are the same from 73-87. Stepside beds where installed from the factory up thru the end of that body style in 87.

if memory serves corredt its the same bed from the fifties on up but the fenders are different,, until they come out with that 88 bed that was fiberglass

ok the bed may have been the same ... the fenders must have been different from what I see in replacement parts, the 73-78 had a reflector or light on the fender and a round hole for the gas cap, the 79 on had a square door and no lights... the shape must have been different(fenders)

and I have never seen a fiberglass one, till more modern style ... that I know of, but would not be surprised...

I think the tail lights were round then square...as well

treefrog340- What Bob was saying is there was very little change to the actual bed "box" itself for many years.

At least from the outside it was the same. The underside had various changes to accommodate the rear frame differences through the years.

Fenders did change from generation to generation, as well as gas cap, gas door, and tail light styles.

as long as the box works on my truck, the fenders should interchange....

If the box fits your frame and the fenders are the 73-87 body style then any stepside fenders in that year model range will interchange. The bedsides (box sides) are punched with the holes to mount the fenders to the box. A box from a '66 model truck will have a different mounting pattern for the fenders than say a '79 model. The tail lights all mount to a bracket on the rear stake pocket of the bed and in the 73-87 model year runs there was both round and squareish lights. I do not know the year that they changed from round to the squarish style.

The fenders in the 73-87 model range are all the same mounting and general shape, but have slight differences in the gas filler location and if it has a gas door or not..
