Re: Rusty Bolts?

Heat the nut to red hot with a torch, then use an impact to remove.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

heat the object that the bolt is threaded into. Heat all around the bolt, not the bolt. If you heat the bolt it is going to expand in the hole. It will probably get brittle if you heat it to red hot. Any good penetrating oil may help, some people heat the bolt a little and melt some kind of wax on it. I guess the wax will penetrate the threads, don't know never tried that one.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

i like to sray them with pb blaster or gibbs oil loads of stuff you cant safely put a torch on sso i'll just try to loosen with a breaker bar turn counter clockwise a turn or two then clockwise a bit to clear threads slow but sure// on some bolts the easy way is just to use a real big breajker bar and turn clockwise to ssnap them off

As some have recommended, I've over tightened some of my 'burb bed bolts until they snapped...

Re: Rusty Bolts?

I just discovered aero kroil. At $13 a can I choked but it works much better than pb blaster. I use kroil, heat, and an impact, one at a time until it comes apart.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

I used a dremel to grind a line in the nut, then stick a flathead screwdriver in it and twist blowing it apart...bolt pops right out...

A trick i learned is to heat the nut than hit it with cold water in a spry bottle.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

I made a discovery. I tried Liquid wrench in the spray can. It worked OK but nothing special. Then I bought Liquid Wrench liquid in the little dropper bottle at NAPA. Stuff works ten times better than the spray version. How I do it is to drop some Liquid Wrench on the threads, the wait about a half hour, then take a ball peen hammer and bop it a couple of times. Then I take a big, ugly Craftsman 1/2" knuckle buster, swear a bunch and that usually gets it off. If it doesn't, then I try new swear words!

Just think of what it does to your stomach and kidneys...

I use PB blaster and a torch. If that doesn't work, an air chisel and off they come.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

A screw style "Nut Splitter" can be pretty handy sometimes. It may not be the best choice in every case, but they do work very well.

I have to say Kroil as well. I spray it the night before or a few days before and it helps a lot. All the mentioned mechanical ways to remove are good as well.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

treat first with rust penetrant and let sit.

if that doesn't work....heat it up with map gas and then cool it rapidly with a squirt bottle (water). try that several times. this shock technique has helped my dad on countless projects.

Re: Rusty Bolts?

1st, Kroil is great, Expensive though, but you get what you pay for. 2nd a torch to heat it (I presume you don't have an Oxy-Acetylene set up) Mapp Gas might do it if the nut is not too big,(Propane will likely not get hot enough), A screw type nut buster if you can get on it, lastly a good old fashion chisel.
