was the bellhousing for a 71-72 V8 alum. or metal? can't find a search

He's a little vague but I guess what LONGHAIR is referring to is that aluminum is metal...
To the best of my knowlege all of the truck ones were cast iron. LockDoc

So, is it hard to find an aluminum one then?? Or just not on 67-72 models? My buddy and I bought an '82 truck for parts. He kept the SM465 cause he uses them in his pulling trucks. I kept the 12 bolt rear, and the front crossmember. This truck had a 305 and an aluminum bellhousing. I kept it thinking I might actually use it someday.

The aluminum ones are quite common. Like you found, later trucks used them. The difference though, is that the early cast iron units had provisions for mounts to the crossmember on the bottom of them that the later ones lack.

The Center hole on the newer truck aluminum bells is bigger than the older cast iron ones. The older truck iron bellhousings and the car aluminum bells had the smaller holes because the bearing retainer on those trans were smaller.
