Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
With my son wanting his truck all black, I'm considering deleting the badges both from the sides of the fenders as well as the letters on the hoood. Thinking sort of a "Stealth" look. Considering buying a replacement tailgate with no stamp on it. So what do you guys think? Remember we're not restoring we're resto modding this thing. He's only 14 so he's looking for more of a "cool" hot rod looking truck than a "cool" old classic.
Also wondering about the chrome sport mirrors that are on it now. Should I keep those or is there some other cool side mirrors that folks are using. |

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
I have a 69 with no Badges. I am going to put them back on because I personally like the contrast. I would do like oarngesi says though. If you don't like it, put them back on.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
On some vehicles, the badges look really tacky. On these trucks, they really define what they are. I think they're tastefully done... But to each their own...
Hey, at least they don't look like the new FORD truck fender badges!! Have you seen those things?? They're the size of a BILLBOARD! |

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
Depends on whether you are using the factory side moldings are not and what other trim you are running. You need contrast somewhere. Personally, I like all black with the 71-72 lower woodgrain bottom molding and thin top molding with no emblems but with chrome bumpers, mirrors and handles. Too much black will be trendy. Need some chrome to break it up and add some class.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
I debadged mine before it was painted many years ago -- it seems a bit cleaner/less cluttered.
resisting the urge to say badges... we don't need no steenking badges!

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
I took my side badges off my 67 C-10. I like it and don't regret it. I did leave the CHEVROLET hood letters on, and wish I had welded up the holes. My letters from LMC are only 3 years old and already have small pitting and pock marks
As far as the mirrors, the sport mirrors are about as cool of a small mirror your going to find for these trucks, IMO, unless you go to a peep mirror, but they aren't very big.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
It's purely a personal preference. If your building a resto-rod I 'd take them off, put roll pans on the front and back and maybe even smooth the cowl.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
Smooth black and stealthy...no badges.Black mirrors would add to that,as well as wipers.I`d think about powdercoating the door handles nd you "could" consider powdercoating the fender badges and installing. Not as smooth, but something different that follows the black theme.Subdued emblems are a cool style, too.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
Thanks for the tips guys. Yes my son, Tyler definitely has to weigh in. It's his truck, but sometimes I think I know what's going to look cooler and I need to show him options. Yes, I'm leading him, but I want to be sure when it's finished he's also digging it.
We're going with all black with the chrome sport mirrors, chrome grille, and chrome front and rear bumpers, and new chrome door handles. Should be enough chrome to break up the black but not so much that it looks cheap, if you know what I mean. |

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
As an aside, the oem designers never drew these vehicles with any badges on them. Artistically, they all look better without badges. However, putting badges on them was a marketing tool, to help sell more vehicles.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
I think that leaving off all badges / shaving handles is getting totally clichéd. Do you have to stick the whole big huge C/10 chrome on both sides? No, but finding a small, rectangular badge that breaks up the big slab sides of these trucks (particularly the large front fender area) really does something for them, IMO. Like that primer black shorty that Fitz posted. That's about perfect to me.

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
Baby John: i like the approach you have planned....no crazy mods, just clean it up a little and keep a most of the factory sparkle in place to make the paint pop. everything shaved or painted is just too monochromatic and boring.
GMCDude: are you possibly building a gmc equivalent of Copperhead. i see from the pic you have a tan bench seat instead of those killer buckets but overall it is an awesome tribute to the first true bad boy street pickup. if i had tons of money i'd build up a burb version! |

Re: Opinions on Badges - Keep em or not
you could ghost the badges into the paint of truck you can only see them in sunlight and up close or use aluminium stickers like on a motorcycletank but under the clearcoat to keep them shiny
