She is running now...but its leaking?

Ok I got the ol 292 running thanks to everyone for the advice. Problem now is it is leaking something from the forward plate on the passenger side of the block. What are these covers and what are they suppose to hold in? There are 2 of them. Both on the passenger side one in front of the other. It is only leaking from the front one next to the distributor. If I take them off can I reseal them or is there a special gasket? Thanks for any and all info on this.

The only thing that should come out if the gasket is bad is engine oil.

Those covers are called pushrod covers.

The gaskets are not hard to find, a lot of vendors carry them and probably some local auto parts places.

Do I need to drain the oil first or will not that much come out? What would be the best way to clean old gas out of the tank? Remove it and rinse it out or siphon out the old and just fill it up with fresh? Any suggestions. Thanks

On your gas tank question, it depends on weather you have rust in the tank.
1. If you have a rusty tank, replacement or coating the inside of the tank is the answer. 2. If you just have bad gas then I would take the tank out(it isn't that hard) drain it and rinse it a few times with good gas. In any case you should install/replace your fuel filter before driving it again. The reason I suggest taking the tank out is when you turn it upside down to drain it if you see a whole bunch of nasty crud come out you might want to think about option 1.

My '67 had been settin' a while, Before I started it for the first time, I pulled the filter out of the carb, cleaned it and put it back, then I added a cheap in-line relatively clear plastic snowmobile fuel filter just before the fuel pump so I could see what was coming out of the tank. It is a lot easier to clean and monitor than the filter inside the carb. You can just pop the hood and look down at it, it will keep the big animals out of the carb fuel filter, and with a screwdrive you can pull it and clean it on the side of the road as you run it in.

When you take the covers off the side of the engine you shouldn't get very much oil since they are above the oil pan and should not see very much pressure, if any.

They are just so you can access the push rods.

The fuel filter before the pump will work this time of the year, but in warmer weather you may have problems with vapor locking.

It is not hard to take the gasoline tank out, but drain it first. It is easier if you remove the seat.

If you want to see how rusty it is you can remove the cover on the tank behind the seat and using a light and mirror see the condition of the tank. Of course you will have to get rid of the gasoline in the tank first.

Good point on the Vapor Lock, but how does the extra fuel filter before the pump add to the temperature of the fuel? It is on the cold side of the motor (No exhaust nearby on the 292)? If anything I would think the body of the filter would even pull a little heat out of the fuel.

Thanks. I pulled the tank out today cleaned it out rather rinsed it out with clean gas. Put it back in filled it up. Put inline filter on and she fired right up. I was pretty excited. Now I can move it around under its own power til I put in different motor. Still trying to figure what to do,go with the 94 TBI 5.7 or just throw on a manifold and carb. What to do????
