Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
OK here is the skinny.....I have 3 suburbans...one is my wife's it's a 96 4WD 3/4 with leather and whole bit. So it's off limits to me. But mine, it's a 1994 3/4 ton 4WD With a 454 and tows like a dream. But off road with the skinny tires and low to the ground stock stance, I've had to be pulled out of the sand, snow, and mud quite a few times. I had plans to get the thing lifted and have bigger tires on it. However I just acquired a third Surburban(needs engine)....it's a 1991(older body style)with no rust. It already comes lifted and with rims and tires. It has manual locks and a cherry interior. My only problem is if I invest into putting a engine in it(350 tbi), would this be a better setup than the 1994? The 1991 has a brand new 3/4 rear end and a strong 700r4 along with a good transfer case and a new flowmaster exhaust system. And I believe it's a independent front suspension in which everyone has their own opinion on and I can't tell ft it would be better or not. The 1994 is all stock except for the new magnaflow cat and muffler, replaced fuel pump, new brakes, new hydroboost, and idler arm. But it has 172,000 miles on it. Now I can't keep both....my wife has made that law because of the space it takes up. But I'm thinking that the 350 tbi for the 91 would be alot cheaper and easier to find than a 454 TBI if I had to replace the engine on the 94 later on. But which one do I keep? one thing I like about the 1994 is the AC....it's nice and cold....and I like the look of it as well. However I feel as if I have less issues with the 91 in terms of more durable things pertaining to the interior and exterior. But I also like the dash of the 94 much better. But I am told that I can change out the dash to a newer one. I'd love to see pics of that if anyone has some. But....I can only keep one. This is killing me and racking my brain right and left!!! Opinions?!?!...Questions?!?!?....HELP!!!!!!!!

hmm, do you still want to tow?
why not get a 383 stroker crate engine for the 91 and sell the 94?

It's simple, pull the 454 out of the '94, have it rebuilt nad drop it in the '91. Best of both.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
There will always be other suburbans... ditch the 91 and keep the 94w/AC. Will the lift and rear end transfer from the 91 to the 94 relatively easy? I have no clue, but if they will...

If its the old square body style(80's style) suburban and a 4x4 then it will have a solid front axle. Indepenent front end I believe started in 1992 for the suburban when they changed to the new body style like the trucks. One thing to consider, my 1995 truck defrost/heater/air conditioning works a lot better than my 1987 truck especially when it comes to defrosting the windows and heating the truck up in the winter.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
I used to have a '90 burban, loved that thing. Put a limited slip in the rear end and could go anywhere it would fit. So what if the dash looks a little old school, mine had AC and worked awesome. 35' tires fit with no lift or flares. Easy to work on, fun to drive... and people got out of the way when they saw it coming.
Cried the day we got rid of it.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
update:
hey guys...I just thought I'd drop a line in this thread to let you guys know what influence you guys can have....lol...I sold the 94 3/4 to my old man and kept the 91. I put a 4 inch lift on her and installed a 97 454 vortec and will also be installing a 97 4l80e (just rebuilt). My only hold up is the transfer case. The old burb had a 241-c for a 700r4. However I think I need the same one but with a 32 spline. I will be ordering the wire harness kit from howell and I think I will be good. The only thing I don't like is the bench seat in the front. Would prefer some stock buckets with a console. But can't be helped. At lease it doesn't have any rips. I think I might have to go 2 more inches in the front for the 35's. They look like they will rub on a turn. |

I knew you were a Square Body guy at heart.
You are correct you need a 241c with the 32 spline input and the correct adapter, in order to use the stock front dif and make your speedo work. This case was on the 87-91 TH400 and the 4l80e.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
i bought this thing for under 500 and now i have lifted it with 1 ton springs, everyone wants to buy it. I tell everyone the same thing....25 grand and it's yours....not a penny less. That usually fixes that problem with people bugging me about it. However I would take this one gen back if I could. A 1972 burb with a gen 4 6.2 engine, rear hatch and interior from a 99. Now that would be out right awesome. Hmm....no one tell my wife....I'm on the hunt ....he he he

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
found a 72 today....he wants 1100 for it...nice but just can't do it....keeping the 91....no matter how much i adore the 72 series, i just can't bring myself to have a 4th suburban. I only have 3 kids.....now if i had more than one wife, then mabee....lol....but i'm not that kind of mormon. I am on my way to having my square finished and my wifes 96 finished. Were selling the 94 to my old man. My wifes is getting a new engine and being setup for CNG. I am having trouble locating a 241-c with a 32 spline input and that is all i would need for the square. may have to wait for spring.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
setting it up with CNG, very nice. I have a scout on propane it is awesome. I am going to build a propane engine for my 67. I'm think 383 stroker. out of a 0100 block.

Re: Help me decide: 2 burbs...can only keep one
I think it is around $.60 per liter or $2.40 per gallon. Honestly I could not afford to drive my scout on gas. On propane it is economical. I gets close to the same mileage as my 325i BMW. It is sweet. The fact that the engine stays clean and lasts longer is an added bonus.
