454 fuel problems

Trying to get my old 86 3500 crew cab up an running, if you spray gas or brake clean it will run for a quick second then die. Tomorrow i have dedicated the morning to get this ol girl movable again, gonna first check to see if getting fuel to the carb, but after that it has dual tanks an you can hear it switch over from tank to tank, short of that could the sending units be toast? It has a new NAPA fuel pump installed in 07 but has only run for a total of maybe 10 hours, just moving around the lot, any ideas guys????

Re: 454 fuel problems

Sounds like it could be a big vacuum leak. Maybe some mouse damage. Check the vacuum hoses.

I have had the little plastic cap come off the brake booster vacuum line connector at the booster. Make sure it is still intact.

The fuel pump may not have liked sitting too as you suspected. Check for fuel pressure after you check the vacuum lines.

Re: 454 fuel problems

definitely no fuel at all at the carb, so I suspect the fuel pump is shot, or could it be the sending units??

Re: 454 fuel problems

I can't see both pickup assemblies getting completely clogged at the same time but it is possible they are.

Try blowing compressed air back through the fuel supply line with the gas caps off.

A new fuel pump is pretty cheap so if it doesn't fix the problem you are not out much.

Re: 454 fuel problems

Do you have locking gas caps?

Have you checked the fuel level in the tanks?

I have had that happen to me. I parked it with half a tank of gas and it died on me heading to work the next day. Didn't notice some jerk siphoned out all my gas until it was too late and the engine was sputtering.

Since your truck was parked a lot it was an easy target for a fuel thief.

Re: 454 fuel problems

Well had a similiar problem last sunday when we got the buick fired up. The thing sat so long dry it would not pick fuel up from the tank. Usually applying pressure to the tank (air) will force enough up to the pump to get it primed dident in our case. I ened up having to disconect the fuel line from the carb and using carb cleaner prime the fuel pump. This worked and she fired up.

Re: 454 fuel problems

how did you prime the pump just spray carb cleaner down through the hose?? Also been checkin the vacuum lines when the top end was reassembled looks like someone had no clue with reading the vacuum schematic on the air cleaner, I ended up with a **** load more lines than needed!!!!! Still no fuel though so have to wait an see if it helps

Re: 454 fuel problems

Well installed the new fuel pump from NAPA today, ran ok for about 5 minutes, ran good gas directly out of a gas can with new gas. Put it all back together, put 5 gallons of new gas in tank, replaced fuel filter in carb, there was quite a bit of junk an rust in filter, tried to start an then nothing AGAIN, removed lines an returned hose to gas can an it pumped a minuscule amount an then stopped, am I missing something currently I have both fuel pumps out, cleaned them out with compressed air all seems normal, anyone have any similar problems??? Im losing my patience LOL

Re: 454 fuel problems

Don't know if this will help, but I can tell you about a similar problem I was having on my '82 3/4 ton...

It, too, has dual tanks. When I got it, it had a pinhole in the bottom of the right tank so I left it empty and just ran off the left tank...don't drive the truck much, so dual tanks didn't seem like a big deal. But I found that if there was less than about 15 gallons in the left tank, it would stumble and die and very hard to start, so I assumed the pump was weak and replaced it. Replaced the rubber lines too. Problem didn't change.

I finally reasoned that the switchover valve wasn't sealing off completely and it's picking up air from the empty right tank. I used a sheet metal screw and a piece of rubber to seal the pinhole and filled the right tank; it now runs great. Filled it up last night and even though it's set to left tank, I had to put 15 gallons in the left tank and 12 in the right, so I'm sure about the valve being the problem. Sometime when I'm not too lazy I need to replace the valve and the right tank.

Do you have some gas in both tanks? If not, try it...

Sorry to hear about your windows; have you found any more? If you were close by I'd give you a set (I'm parting a couple of suburbans), but I'm guessing shipping 'em would be a real challenge.
