Dana 44 Axle shaft interchange?

I still need to replace the Drivers side stub shaft on my '71 framed ('67 cab/title) 3/4 ton truck. finding one of these pieces is a pain in the @$$, from what I am reading is that the '73 and later axle shafts can be used. What particular years should I be looking for if I want to replace them, and will it work with the 3/4 ton axles?

Okay, So I found some replacements on Ebay. Stupid question #2, would it be safe to only replace the driver side assembly?, as money is tight at the moment and then eventually replace the passengers side when funding allows?

Re: Dana 44 Axle shaft interchange?

what I am saying is that I am going to put a '73- axle assembly in the driver's side and leave the early style axle shaft on the other side, I just wonder if the different u-joint sizes would cause any balance problems.

Re: Dana 44 Axle shaft interchange?

you are talking about 1-2oz at the most, how much do you weigh and do you counter balance you weight with balast on the pside?

yes the ENTIRE axle sahft assembly will swap with no issues. like you said you dont want to mix a old inner with the small joint with a newer outer with a big joint.
