700r4 question???

I just found a 700r4 and transfer case in great condition and want to use it on my swb 4x4, I noticed that the steering columns have more than just P_R_N_D_2_1, the question is will I have to replace my steering column or just get a new gear indicator for the column?

Thanks for the help as always

Re: 700r4 question???

You will just need to order a new gear indicator.

Re: 700r4 question???

do a search in the FAQ section. I have a 700 in my Blazer. I wired it to be able to manually lock up the converter with a toggle switch, but also unlock it thru the stop light switch. This way if you are putt putting around town you can leave the converter unlocked. but if you are cruising 50 + you can lock up the converter.

Re: 700r4 question???

do you need to run a lock up torque converter?
I tried the search but it never seems to get every post titled for some reason....

Re: 700r4 question???

Just got home from dinner. A 30 mile ride in my Blazer with my wife. I will send you a pm tomorrow with detailed info on why and how to wire the lock up converter you need. If this old fat man spaces, remind me on Sunday that I dropped the ball. It is beer thirty!

Re: 700r4 question???

I would think that you would want lock up in 4th gear only. Find a local trans shop and ask them to wire the trans this way. the electrical connector for the trans is available from your local ACDELCO SUPPLIER. the purple wire in the connector is what you want to be 12v hot.

12v+ key on thru a 4 terminal brake lite switch, thru a toggle switch to the trans 'A' terminal at the connector.

Mine is that way, and works perfect

Re: 700r4 question???

In the later (88 and later, i think) 700 transmissions, you don't absolutely need to have the converter lockup, though it helps with fuel economy. The early '80s will overheat too easily without the lockup.

Re: 700r4 question???

I have a 700r4 in my 72 cst Blazer. I put the lockup on a seperate dimmer switch and an indicator light under the dash. It works well. I found that you must use a adjustable throttle bracket to insure a fully open valve inside the trans. I purchased one from Bowtie transmissions. These guys seem to know all about 700r4 installs. They sell veverything you need. I see them in the Pamona CA. swap meet and the have always been helpful to me.
