want larger gas tank
I am looking for a larger fuel tank for my 72 K/5. I was told a 31 gal. tank from a 85ish blazer will fit. Has anyone tried this? If so is it easy to do? or are there other tanks that will fit? any info would help.

Re: want larger gas tank
I have done this. I think they make a 24 gal as well. I'm not sure on the difference in dimensions between the two. Seems like JC Whitney used to list dimensions for the different size tanks.
I put a 31 gal tank in mine. Any blazer from 73 up. Get a sending unit from the earlier years. They have less lines to plug off. I moved the original rear crossmember back as far as it would go. I used a front tank crossmember from a blazer or suburban. I used the filler neck from my original tank. Solder it to the newer tank. The newer tanks have the filler on the passenger side, so you will have to remove it and solder a piece of metal over the hole. Not very difficult to do. The extra capacity has been one of the best things I have done to my blazer. Hope this helps.

Re: want larger gas tank
The previous owner of my Blazer did this and I like it. The main difference that I can see is the metal straps that hold the tank in place. If I'm not mistaken the original tank straps ran side to side under the tank. The newer 73+ style runs front to back, at least thats how the PO did it on mine. He just drilled some holes to one cross member and added another out of square stock. I am in the middle of rebuilding my blazer and I plan to freshen up this tank and re-use it, as far as I can tell it is the 31 gallon variety.

Re: want larger gas tank
I new there was a reason for using the newer front crossmember. I just couldn't remember what the heck it was!

Re: want larger gas tank
I did find a 37 Gal. tank. It comes in a kit, has every thing you need at http://www.justgastanks.com but it is $599.99 to pricy for me. The dimensions for the origanl tank is 29"x14"x17" 21 gal. The 25 gal. out of the 73- is 28"x28"x11" and the 31 gal. is 28"x28"x13". Will the sending unit out of the origanl tank work in the 31 gal. tank?

Re: want larger gas tank
what was the source for the 37 gallon tank? thinking it might be adaptable to a burb also. CPP has a 26 gallon tank for my 72 burb, but 5 extra gallons isn't worth the $600 investment plus installation.

Re: want larger gas tank
Not a very good pic but this is my,North West Metal Products, NWMP.com, 37 gal tank. It's big and the factory's location hangs a bit low..mine has been moved up about 2.5", my body lift allowed me to move it up and I built a stout skidplate to protect it..

Re: want larger gas tank
You will have to get a sending unit from a 73 up tank. I bought a used one from the salvage yard for $15. Seems like new ones were kind of spendy. When I got my tank I bought a new one. I can't remember how much. Seems like it was in the $150 range. You should be able to pick up a used one for cheap if you want to save some $.

Re: want larger gas tank
I got an NOS 31 gallon tank from a 90 blazer at a swap meet and will be installing it in my blazer once I get a chance to get all the parts I need for it, which is basically everything.

Re: want larger gas tank
Once I find time to get to the junkyard and source the rest of the parts, I will be sure to take pictures.
