Ok. I got a 700r4 off craigslist a while back. It came out of a 1989 Firebird. I was told that I needed to get a tailhousing off something like a Caprice. My trans is setup for an electronic speedo. I don't really care about switching it to a manual speedo because I don't have any intention of using the stock guages, so would there be any reason that I would need to swap the tailhousing?

My 700R came out of an 83 firebird. I used the 'bird tailhouseing and mount, but when I installed the crossmember, I could only use 2 of the 4 bolts, and had to drill 2 new holes, one on each side. I used the stock V-8 mount locations for my 350, and that's just where it ended up. I also had to shorten my driveshaft.

Does your 83 700r4 have a manual speedo?

I am trying to figure out if I need to change the tailhousing or not since I don't really care about sticking with the stock speedo guage.

Yes, it is mechanical.

No, you don't have to change out the tailhousing.

*If* you wanted to swap it out, again, you don't have to change the tailshaft, but you do have to take it off to access the little plastic gear inside, and you will need to replace the gear unit thats C clipped on the side of the trans:
