Question 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

this is probably a ?? for LHM but I found a 66 cady covertable and wounder if anyone has done this transplant..it's not the big ponie 500 I wanted but still has 350 hp and 420 lbs of torque so not bad for a stock boat anchor

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

there are not alot of parts for the 429 at all. Even stock replacement parts are getting harder to find.

Not really worth it, imho

the cad 429 is an overweight underpowered boat anchor. As mentioned, hardly anything avalible for it. It was outdated even in its day.

I'm with the others, you're gonna have a headache maintaining that motor,
and not get the performance you're after.

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

Yea the car is in a outside metal carport the top is down and it's full of "Stuff" but from what I could see it the interior is in ok shape but who knows about the roof and the truck wouldn't open due the lock being frozen and not wanting to break the key....the motor was all intact tires are dry rotted from sitting on the dirt and the rear quarters are going to need lower panels..who knows what the bottom looks like from sitting on the dirt...bet we can guess though.....I was thinking parts car but unless I can steal it I guess it will sit there for awhile longer.....the thing I was just thinking is that if I can get it I'll have a trany and all the BB caddy hangers A/C and all the bolt on stuff then get the other 2 motors and build it myself...its a long winter so it's not like I don't have the time...
the problem is that I'm getting the urge for a sled...by sled I mean I found a 48 buick with a straight 8 in it and I have been looking ( kinda ) for something like this to make a retro lead sled out of so that I can go pick up my buddy and his other half and go out to dinner and not have to take 2 car thing...4 doors with foot rests n the back Moe hair seats...all I would do is lower it add a bit of red pin stripes and let it roll....if I dive into that project the my truck will probably stay the way it is and be used for what it was built for trucking and chasing parts..heres what it's doing these days of course a set of pro streets would make it easier on the lawn

Hey Hottrucks! I got it. Take the Buick straight 8 out and put that in your truck. Now that would be interesting!

yea the kool factor would be nuts...If I converted the truck from auto to 3 on the tree ( thats what's in the car) it wouldn't be so hard I'm just not sure it would bolt up to the automatic in there now

Good point. Probably would be a tough matchup.

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

If you're going to put a big block caddy engine in your truck, go with the 472 or 500... preferrably the 500 just for the extra power. Try to find one out of a 68-70 caddy for max hp.

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

I had a '67 Caddy with the 429. Everyone is correct that there isn't &%$@ available for it. It's not a bad engine, but you'd probably do just as well with a 350. The only time it really came alive was at wide open throttle. I had an open air cleaner on it and it would really sing. But still not that great.

Now, what DID impress me was putting 5 people and enough luggage so I was an inch from the bump stops in it, driving to Vegas and getting 14 MPG at 70 - 75 MPH. It pulled just fine and I doubt that a 472 or a 500 would get that kind of mileage... (ok, prove me wrong... let's hear the stories!)

snip
Assuming by truck wouldn't open you mean trunk, that one is easy...
Remove the back seat.
Put up what is left of the top.
Put ALL your socket extensions together. (You'll need a lot on a Caddie)
I think the bolts that hold the mechanism the lock catches are 5/16".
Put a 5/16ths on your extensions and unbolt the mechanism - you'll need to push what is left of the 'bag' the top folds down in to out of the way to reach through with your socket and extensions.

Once the trunk is open you can remove the lock and replace it with one that works.

Not that I've had to do this before.

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

the cad 425 could easily get that kind of MPG, the only time I ever checked my MPG it was in the mid 16s rolling 65 - 70, with a 4.10 gear. The 425 to 500 is an amazing motor.
I have a neighbor with a cad 429/TH400/gear vendors/14 bolt with 3.73 in a DRW 67 one ton flat bed truck, and he loves it. But wheneverr it goes down, it's down for 2 to 3 weeks.

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

nothing, still getting driven. It's sitting on the curb right now.
The junkyard 425 cad is spewing oil and coolant and making death noises, so I grabbed a 78 burb with a 454 to donate it's guts. I already know I'll be disapointed with the outcome, but, i know its a good motor and I don't have the funds to overhaul a cad motor.
gotta do what ya gotta do.

I see 500" caddys complete at a pick a part. Not as much as a couple years back. Maybe I should get a couple before it's too late.

A friend and I put a 472 in a '77 4wd 3/4 ton a few years back. It was actually kind of a PITA.

I'm assuming the 425 is a different character than the 429, right? I know the 429 is a bored/stroked/whatever'd 390. What year(s) did Caddy use the 425? Can I assume they used that to leapfrog to the 472, then the 500? That would make it about a '68 or '69 motor... Am I in the ballpark?

Re: 429 Caddy in my C 10 help??

I don't have my notes with me here (at the girlfriend's place) but if memory serves, the 472 was first, in 68, then the 500 in 74 maybe. In 76 it was 500 only. Then in 77 or 78 the 425 came into play. It is of the same family as the 500/472. They took a lot of time to make the 425 lighter, to the point it is almost as light as a chevy small block. Then they tuned the crap out of it for MPG. The 425 is a common one for truck owners becouse it gets awesome MPG and still makes plenty of torque. As the cad sites will tell you, the only time you'll miss the 75 cubes in a pick up (being used as a pickup) would be when fully loaded/towing and on a seriouse hill. But, in reality, even then, you'll be ahead of the comparible chevy engines, and still getting better MPG.

I would use the truck in the background for hauling the wood! Sure it might be pita loading it, but just think of the cardio workout you would get pitching chunks of wood over the bedsides!

Yes, the 429 is a completely different monster. the 425 is the same block as the 472, 500. Just different bore, stroke. If I remember right, the 425 has the same crank as the 472 with a smaller bore, the 500 uses same bore as 472 with a longer stroke.

If you want to make a 472 a 500, though, there's some machining you have to do inside to make the crank fit properly without hitting something.
