Will an '80 SM465 / NP205 combo fit
In a '72 blazer K5. The current set-up in the '72 is a SM456 / NP208. I want to switch it out to the NP205. Would it be a simple bolt in / bolt out or what modification would I need to do? Any help in advance appreciated. Thanks.

Well originally that's how a 1972 4x4 k5 with a manual tranny would have come, sm465/205. If you currently have a sm465/208 then someone swapped it in and possibly alrealy "modified" a number things. Long story short it shouldn't be a big deal to return it to the original setup. You might have to track down an original cross member and drive shaft etc. You will want to swap out the tranny and the transfer case together though. The 205 transfer case won't bolt right up to a sm465 that is meant for a 208. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

Thanks for the quick reply. I realize it should have had a 205 originally but during restoration the 465 / 208 combo was what he had in good working order. I didn't realize that the 465 currently in it with the 208 transfer case wouldn't bolt up correctly to the 205 transfer case. My biggest concern was the 465/205 combo I have a lead on is out of a 1980 1 ton. Other than a possible cross member and drive shafts, is there any other issues? Shifter holes should line up ok in the tunnel etc. Was there any major differences to the 465/205 over the years. Again any more info appreciated.

Here's the deal, (I'm assuming that your two combonation are basically stock) the np208 should have a 32 spline FEMALE input shaft, which means the sm465 that is bolted to it has a 32 spline output shaft. The older style sm465/np205 should have a 10 spline shaft joined by a "sleeve". This probably doesn't make much sence without seeing it but the point is the cases probably look identical along with the shifters and whatnot, but the shafts will be different. And I'm not sure, but the two trannies *might* have different input shafts meaning you might need to swap the clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing. The bell housing should be the same though.
