Old Wood grain comparison with new

I thought some of you Cheyenne Super guys would find this interesting.

Here's some pictures for comparison. The new bezel has the old 3m di-noc woodgrain on it. Before it started being made in Taiwan or China.

There are two samples of the new taiwanese woodgrain in the photos.

One is sample # wg254 and one is # 430.

The old di-noc # that Gm used is 254.

It's interesting to note that GM used some kind of adhesive that seemed to fill the pebbling of the bezel face in order to get a smooth fiish and to adhere the di-noc to it.

If nothing else, it's something to fuel discussion.

I have a roll and a piece of DiNoc in the tube, with GM part numbers on the tube. I haven't looked at it to see what those numbers are. It was originally used for the wood grain on the outside of some early-mid 70's vehicles. Do you think that my DiNoc is the right stuff?

GM laminated a thin piece of plastic onto the face.

Re: Old Wood grain comparison with new

Yep, the original woodgrain is a thin plastic overlay instead of just di-noc. My NOS cheyenne super woodgrain bezel was made in 1988 and matches better with the colors and graining on 430 than 254. They were still making the orignal Di-noc back then. The adhesive you see on your original bezel is a contact cement to glue the plastic that is the woodgrain on the original to the plastic bezel. Interesting bit of detective work. After all this time, the best we've got is still the 40 year old method.

Re: Old Wood grain comparison with new

Yeah,it`s photo-etched like the door panels on aluminum. The only vinyl was exterior woodgrain.I`m not familiar with di-Noc,never heard of it until now.Is that the mylar sticker name or what? What are these numbers for,a specific pattern, like all cars only use one of 3 or so patterns?
I`m having a guy in Ohio do grain paint on my stuff. Not original, prolly simulated black walnut or something different.I`m giving him an odd insert I have to do for a display at shows.
If I still had my other two K/20s one would have gotten real wood veneer.Who knows,I may still do that. But,this guys grain paint is awesome and makes me want to go that way now.I guess I could have him mimmick the N.O.S. ones but I want something a tad different.
