Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

What was the original color of these engines?
And mine has the center front mount. Is this the same mount as the I/6?I'm asking about the part on the front of the crossmember that the engine mount sits on.

They were originally a dull red, which they don't make anymore. I think a lot of guys are using a Ford red that is close to the factory color.

Do you have any pics of the mount?

I've used Ford Red, looks fine to me! Not sure on the motor mount but I'd doubt it's the same as on the inline 6. What truck is this in?

Re: Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

It's a 351 out of a large dump truck.I want to put it in a 64 GMC.
It uses the single center front mount, similar to the I/6 center front mount.
I have it on a motor stand to run it,but I'd like to put it in the truck to get it out of the way,so I need to fab a mount for it.Want to paint it first.
There's some pictures in my picturetrail.

The engine in my 5000 mounts that way, 1-ton and below use mounts on the side of the block. It shouldn't be hard to find a set, I'd recommend installing it using the factory setup. I can take some pics if you need them, let me know.

Re: Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

BobS,thanks for the pictures offer---Yes,I would like to see the mounts!
I've never seen those that you speak of.
I have a 63 truck with the I/6 front mount. It is 1" longer than I need. So,I could make one if I have to.
My 351 is a 71 or newer engine with an alternator(and pcv). And I have the power steering pump mounted also. Will be using the 60/67 ram style cylinder and valve.Would the mounts interfere with these accessories?
Thanks for your time and help!
Mike.

Re: Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

Here's a shot of what the motor mount setup looks like on the driver side, passenger side is similar. The photo above also shows the motor mount on the side of the engine. Second pic is a shot of the two holes where the medium duty truck motor mounts bolt to the block, you can also see the motor mounts on the side of the block and how they mount to the frame, similar to Chevy V-8s.

You shouldn't have any problems finding the correct motor mounts.

I was out poking around the Junk Yard today and actually saw one of these Engines in a truck and it looked to be complete. Are these old Engines worth much?

If you're a true purest for the GMC yes, but more importantly the added on parts are worth some money. Did the one you see have the Power Steering setup? or other add on? A few members are looking for the PS/PB OEM setup.

Re: Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

BobS shows the bolt on frame mounts and JBGroby shows welded on frame mounts.
Which is which?
Different years?
Which is for a 64 GMC?
I have the bolt on frame mounts already, just don't have the steel that bolts on the engine.I may be able to make those if I can't find any.
These "Old" engines are exactly that.Old.They haven't made them for many years.GMC's only attempt to make a GMC only engine and it worked very well for what they were designed for.
They have hellacious torque and reliability. The fuel mileage sucked. But who cared when gas was around .22 a gallon average in 1960.
The value varies according to which engine you're looking at.There were a lot of different models depending on the year and application. And accessories.
I was offered $500.00 for my 351 C.Not enough for me.
Thanks to all for your time and effort to answer my questions. And I really needed the pictures!
I'm in no hurry on this as I have several projects going and I move around a lot between them.
Mike.

I know for sure the welded mount were for 1960-61-62. Post a question on the 6066 GMC group, you're sure to get an answer.

Re: Questions:GMC 305/351 V/6 engines?

I'm guessing the bolt-ins are 66-69, my 65 has the older style but it's a NAPCO and there's no telling what was original on it.

I'd think the 66 style would be the easier ones to put in. I've never checked but I've always figured the 67-69s used the same as the 66. If that's the case I may have an extra set around here. I'll check tomorrow.
