wiper motor access

I'm trying to trouble shoot my wiper system, and I'm not sure how to get to all the wiring and the motor, I can barely see the motor when I stick my head under the dash, and thats a pretty tight squeeze (I'm 6' 3'') so I was wondering what the best way to reach this was.

If it were me, I'd pull the guage cluster. That would give you access to the switch as well which might be your culprit.

how do the gauges disconnect from the wires and cables that they're connected to? I tried taking the cluster off awhile back but wasn't sure how to do that and didn't want to break nothin.

removal of the gauge cluster requires the following:
-removal of the screws around the outside bezel
-remove the trim ring around the light switch (threaded onto the dash)
-reach up behind the dash, push the button on the top of the light switch housing while pulling on the light switch, this will get the switch out of the way
-loosen set screw on wiper knob and remove knob from shaft
-remove trim ring around wiper knob shaft, same as light switch trim ring
-speedo cable is threaded into the back of the speedo
-oil pressure line (if equipped) is threaded into the back of the oil pressure gauge
-There will be a large wiring connector with locking tabs on each end plugged into the back.

It is entirely possible I've fogetten something, or that your cluster has things mine doesn't or vice versa, but this should get you a long way down the road

The only thing I can add is that the fitting for the oil pressure line is 5/16's so unless you want to use vise grips, have the correct wrench handy. Also, you may want to drop you column 1/2 inch or so to make it easier to pull cluster up and out without teearing the printed circuit on the backside (note you definately have to drop it if you have a tach)

To do this you'll need a phill;ips head screwdriver and a 1/2 inch socket with 3 inch extension.

1. Use the screwdriver to remove the retainer that holds the rubber grommet around the column in place. This grommet is the one you see where the column goes thru the cluster.

2. Using the 1/2 inch socket and extension, loosen but don't remove the 2 bolts that hold the strap around the column in place. Loosening this strap allows the column to drop for easier removal of the cluster. You don't need to remove the plate with the pedal bump stops to get to these bolts, but a good light will help you locate them.
