5 Speed Swap Question
I was wondering how hard it would be to swap in a 5 spd from an 02/03 3500 to an 82 3/4ton with a granny low 4 spd?
I figure the trans should hold up since it came from a 1 ton but what I am wondering is how difficult it might be to swap in the later trans. I found the 5 spd for 450 bucks and would love to get the overdrive since I have a few long haul trips I need to make with the 82. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Paul

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
i know for sure you would have to make a custom cross member, and get a different length driveshaft. maybe cut a bigger hole in the floor and theres probably somewiring connections you need but im not for sure. i dont think i have ever heard ofanyone doing this.. it would be cool though.. if its possible

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Considering how many trips I need to make to go get the rest of my stuff..... it might be worth the effort especially with gas starting to yo-yo again.
I take it that the clutch will be hydraulic since I found some other threads on a 5spd on the board with talk of the hyd. clutch. That might not be such a problem. My concern has to deal with the bolt pattern for the 02/03 truck. I tried to get some info on what the trans came out of since it was just sitting on the floor and I got very little. Came from the 02 ( might have been 03 ) truck with a v8 and that it was a 3500. This might sound dumb but is the bell housing bolt pattern the same with a 350 in the 82 verses the new 02 model?? As far as the driveshaft that shouldn't be too much trouble although I would have to find a place close by. ( Lived here just over a year and still trying to locate all the goody store/places in this area ). Right now I see the bellhousing bolt pattern, clutch, and cross member being the biggest problems. Although the clutch might not be quite so bad. Hmmmmmm...

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
achevy trans bolt pattern is a chevy trans bolt pattern. it will bolt up. the cross member would be the least of my worries.im not too farmiliar with these transmisions and i dont know what kind of electronics you need to run it right... and the clutch is another story. i really have no idea on that.. anybody know if this is gonna work? i think it would be awesome to see

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Suggest Googling "nv4500" and start reading. As your trans came from a 1 ton model then you should have a NV 4500.
A couple of years ago I assisted with a NV 4500 install into a 70's era one ton replacing the SN 465 4-speed. We installed the hydraulic master cylinder, line and slave cylinder from an early 90's one ton, (I recall using the same cross-member) and had to modify the driveshaft....actually we had a new one built since it was a few dollars more than replacing the carrier bearing and U-joints. We did not have functioning speedometer since the original truck had a cable activated speedometer vs. the VSS module on the new trans. However I recall the bellhousing for the NV 4500 is unique since the trans to bell housing bolt spacing is unique. However the b/h bolted right to the SBC motor. If you go this route, take photos and good notes and post your results. Update: I checked with the guy I assisted and he modified the crossmember prior to my involvement. Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Go with a NV4500. No electronics, just crossmember, driveshaft, and hyd/ clutch to deal with.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
I didn't recall any electronics ( no wires ) from the trans but I do remember seeing a line coming out of the top of the bellhousing I think ( can't remember exact location but can go look again ).
I will run by and check again tomorrow. I will see if I can get some pics of the trans. It is sitting out on the floor so shouldn't be a problem. So far this looks some what like a do-able project. Paul

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Yes electronics, they use a VSS instead of a cable driven speedometer. I have heard that some where in the 88-91 era they put electronic speedos in our trucks so you should be able to use in of those.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
well if the only wiring needed is for the speedo, and everything else is pretty straight forward, all that leaves is the clutch..

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Was there any other trans in the 02/03 trucks or just the 4500?
Either way I will go back by there tomorrow and go back over the trans again and see whats what. I doubt that both trans will be gone since there was 2 sitting there together. One still had a bell housing and fork as well as the shifter. It was the more complete of the two so that is the one I am more interested in. I will still take pics tomorrow and post back with what I find out. Paul

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
check your spline count on the transmission just to make sure. Those LS motors are a whole new animal as far as engines go.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Prior to returning to check the transmissions, print this list and use it to determine where the trans came from.

dan76: that is a great link. Thanks for that info. I think that will be handy for a lot of us at some point.

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Quote:
GM used VSS speedometers for all years. Dodge used speedo gears for most of the `90s 2wd trannies. If you have a 4x4 then the speedo drive is not in the tranny. Hybrid GM/Dodge NV4500s have been built by swapping the input shafts and bellhousings. So you need to check everything (input/output spline counts, input shaft lengths & diameters) to verify what you are looking at. Spline counts and input shaft measurements are in this article NV4500 Wiki |

Re: 5 Speed Swap Question
Well I know it had a fork that I can be 99% sure about. I'm not 100% sure that the info on what it came out of it correct but thats all I got.
Today ended up being a bust so hopefully tomorrow if the place is open I will go check it out. I will get pics and take down any numbers I can find. If no luck in tomorrow then hopefully the first of the week or their next day open I will gather up what I can. Thanks again for the help and links. Paul
