How Long should this take me?

This winter im gunna start a half frame off restoration on my 68 LWB. I have set my goals for this winter and i think that i have set them to be fairly reasonable. Im a Freshman in college so i will have an entire month off to work on it. I have some experiance doing cut and weld jobs as well. My truck dnt really have bad rust issues but i wanna fix them before they become issues.

I plan on replaceing the drivers side rocker, both cab corners, taking the bed off and painting the rear half of the frame with POR 15, welding up some rust pin holes on the bed, and then putting the bed back on. I was also wondering if it is possible to put cab mounts on without taking the cab off the frame?

I will prolly have 2 guys working with me and my girlfriend!

Re: How Long should this take me?

You can get it all done in a month. Making weekly or better yet daily goals will make it easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Take your time with the body metal. When replacing the rocker use as many clamps as possible and constantly check your door gap as you go along. Almost all aftermarket patch panels love to shift around. You can suport the cab on stands or place boards between the cab and frame while swapping mounts.

Re: How Long should this take me?

If you diligently stick to the plan you should be able to do it in the timeframe outlined. But as with most of us on here you will never be finished and those that actually do finish their projects report that it took 3 times as long and cost 4 times as much as they planned. My advice to you is to not get distracted by "other" things you want to do....unless they concern the safety of yourself or others on the road.

Re: How Long should this take me?

yep, pick one job and do it completely before starting another. You can unbolt the cab, slide a 2x6 over the frame and do the cab mounts, no need to pull the cab. Don't take to much apart, they take forever to put back together and your budget goes to crap!

Re: How Long should this take me?

i just unbolt one side of the cab a short piece of wood to spread the load and jack the cab up 2inches or so slip the body mounts in get the bolts started then lowere cab then do the other side // that should only take 1-2hours tops

Welding the mounts? You shouldn't have to unbolt the core support when working on cab mounts. I was under the impression that you were just replacing the rubber... what are you welding?

I believe that he is talking about welding on new cab "supports" assuming that if the rockers and cab corners are needing replaced....the supports are probably rusted out as well.

Re: How Long should this take me?

Mine was suppose to be a 6 month project. Well a year later I am no where close to done.

I starts simple, I'll do this or that and next thing you know you have it completely stripped to the frame. Just be careful how much you take apart. In some cases, less is more if you know what I mean.

Good luck and post up pics.

Re: How Long should this take me?

Yeah i ment the supports! i get confused with wording some time! i have no plans to take the truck down to bare frame as 85% of the truck is in great shape and its my run around truckso i plan on keeping it drivable(for the most part) as i work on it

Re: How Long should this take me?

I would not have your GF help other than to bake cookies and make lemonade, UNLESS she's really into it and likes wrenching. My wife won't do anything except maybe pump the brakes when I bleed them. If I try to get her involved any further, she resists. Also, you will likely have to make time for her apart from your truck. That might cut down on wrenching time. Just a thought.

Re: How Long should this take me?

Pretty soon your on your third cab and going to swap the frame.....Oh wait that is me! My glove box, vin tag, hood, and dented tailgate will be from the same truck.

Things come apart fast and go back together fast. Its the time and the middle that is the killer. Good luck, do your best and have fun.
