Tire Recommendation

OK, I plan on ditching the split rims and bias ply tube tires that are on my GMC now. I am going to get plain white steel wheels, probably 16" (don't know if 15"will fit 3/4 ton). I may or may not be lifting my truck, I may because I looked at pics of Jims70GMC and it looks sweeeeet with a 2" lift and 33" Super Swampers.
Anywho, I am taking recommendations for a tire to get. I am going to be putting mostly highway miles on these tires, and don't care if they are louder or anything. I will be doing some moderate offroading, and I will need a mud tire for it. It seems a lot of guys swear by BFG muds, but I have heard good things about the new Super Swamper TrXus mud radial. Also, some of the cheaper (cost) tires out there (Cooper, General, Maxxis)...has anyone tried any of these brands? Thanks for the input.

Mine are 15" rims on 3/4 ton axles, the drums up front allow them to fit. I had "Mud Kings" on an 85 K5 that were good they were made by BFG but were $30 cheaper.

If you are going to buy rims, I think it would be foolish not to do 16's for disc brake clearance eventually. 265 75 16 is stock height but wider for a 3/4 ton. Looks excellent. Same as a 31 10.5 15 pretty much. BFG ALl terrains are the best choice for a 70% road 30% off-road vehicle. If you do 95% road travel, get Michelin road tires.

I have had a lot of people warn me to steer clear of the BFG mud terrain for heavy highway use. Most people I know who run them tell me they’re “Junk” I don’t know if that’s true or not.

I can personally swear by BFG All Terrain’s. I think BFG All Terrains are probably your best bet as well. They are good in just about every wheeling condition, they last a long time on the highway and they don't break the bank. They have a great sidewall and good load range and there not to loud. There also common so if your on a wheeling trip and you tear one up you can usually find a replacement anywhere... Remember though, the white lettering goes on the inside … Pete.

I have run both the BFG all terrain and the mud terrain and I personally like the mud terrain. All terrains are a better highway tire but they don't do that well in mud and snow. I have found the muds to be acceptable on the highway. When I lived in Montana guys who ran the all terrains had a hard time keeping up with those who ran a mud version of most any brand. Still it goes back to how and where you drive your truck. (BTW I run mine with the whitewalls out!!!)

I believe the 12.50 width is the widest available for the 35" ATKOs. I asked if a wider width was available when I bought mine last month, the answer was no. Check the BFG website to make sure.

After having done both 14.5 and 12.5 tires, I much prefer the 12.5s. 12.5 is the widest offered by BFG, but Nitto has a 14 wide 35" tire I believe. They offer a really trick 14" wide 37" tall for 18" rim tire, but you can imagine the price...
