I have an interesting question

I am getting ready to install a 5.3 LS engine into my 1972 Jimmy. I don't have a garage and have been looking for a garage to do it in. I have a couple of lawyers that are going to let me use their garage. They store some files upstairs and a snowblower in there and I think it will work out great. My question is how can I keep from having it smell like gasoline in there when I rework the lines for a fuel pump. I will try to be carefull and not spill any but anyone know of any tricks to help with gas smell?

I don't think you'll be able to avoid the smell completely. I'd use drip pans under the lines when you disconnect them and make sure you take the drip pans and anything that gets gas on it out as soon as possible.

Keep the door open when working with the fuel stuff and buy some kitty litter or equivalent that soaks up spills. Pinch or plug off the fuel lines to the tank while you're doing everything else, the vapors will stink up the garage.

Re: I have an interesting question

kitty litter is a bad idea if theres stray cats in the vicinity it will attract them. of course you wont have gas smell but i dont think the lawyers will appreciate the smell of cat piss// autoparts stores sell oildri alot cheaper than kitty litter

Re: I have an interesting question

Remember, you are working in a garage. There will be some expectation of smells. If they know you are swapping an engine, they should know what to expect.

Ventilation will be key. Of course if there is a snow blower in there ventilation may be a challenge this time of the year. I assume snow is in your future.

I wonder if there isn't something you could leave in there to soak up smells. Like the Baking Soda in the fridge trick.

Don't trust those lawyers. They will sue you. It's in their nature.

Re: I have an interesting question

Use kitty litter. The cat piss will hide the fuel smell and the lawyers can`t make you liable for the actions of the stray cats.

Re: I have an interesting question

I spilled a can of gas in the trunk of my old car one time. I left the trunk open for 2 days and the smell would not go away. Finally I heard from someone that vanilla would do the trick. I left a bowl of Watkins Vanilla extract in the trunk for a week(only while it was parked) and the smell went away. At the end of the week the vanilla had a rainbow film of oil on the top. Don't know if that fixed it or if it just takes time for the smell to leave, but the trunk didn't smell like gas after that.

Re: I have an interesting question

Thanks guys some of the replies were pretty funny. These guys are my friends and are doing me a BIG favor. I am trying to respect them and their tenants more than I have to. I am their electrician and will be there when they call at 2 AM, likewise they have been there when I called at 2 AM (cough cough).

Re: I have an interesting question

Those late night lawyer calls are in your past now, right?

I know one thing, vanilla mixed with gasoline would be right flammable.

The airborne vapors will dissipate,it`s getting the gas on anything that will linger.i`d consider laying heavy plastic sheeting down first.Maybe roll the edges up in 2x4s to create a curb to hold any spillage contained. The only other concern would be rolling it out.If some surface in the garage is exposed beteen the door and where it`s worked on,lay some plastic for the tires to roll over to keep what`s on the tread off the slab.

Maybe drain the lines before you put it in the shop?

Re: I have an interesting question

I have sent them lost of clients over the years. They have helped me out of a couple of small problems and one that could have been a big one. I have nothing to sue for so I am not worried about that, just don't want to burn any bridges by pouring gas on the fire (you see what I did there?).

I plan on running the truck low on gas. I am planning tarps/plastic/drip pans and removing anything that gets gas on it. Knowing my luck though as I am cleaning everything up I'll trip, spilling a gallon or two of gas and what I will need to do or have available to remedy my mistake?

Re: I have an interesting question

Another option that we use at work are PIG mats. They soak up anything and they hold a ton of liquid. So if you spill you can soak it up quick and get it outside without the hassle of piles of kitty litter.
