fuel tank sending unit for a 69?

I believe I need a new sending unit for my truck. The gauge reads on empty all the time. I replaced the fuel gauge with another gauge I had in a spare cluster and it does the same thing. I can unplug the tan wire from the fuse box that runs to it from the tank and the needle on the gauge will move past full. I can then plug it back up and it goes right back to empty. Who has a quality reproduction at a fair price?

Re: fuel tank sending unit for a 69?

You may not need a new sending unit. Pull the sending unit out of the tank and move the float up by hand and watch the gauge. The float is made out of very thin brass and a lot of times gets a small pin hole and fills with gas keeping it from floating with the fuel level. If it works when you do it by hand you could either replace the float or do what I normally do and find the hole and solder it shut. If you do solder it shut make sure you open the hole up a little bit and get all the gas out. Oh and don't use a torch for obvious reasons, a small electrical solder gun will do the trick.

Thanks for the tip. I will check it out to see if it has a leak in the float.
