Msd hei?
I just finished putting an MSD Street Fire dist. in my son's '67. Stock 260 hp crate motor, Edelbrock performer carb and intake. Set initial advance at 10 degrees, total centrifigul was only 29 all in at 3000 rpm. I adjusted the vacum advance four turns out for a total of 51 degrees all in at 3000. It starts and runs well but I am a little curious that the total centrifigul is only 29. Any opinions?

Re: Msd hei?
51 total is way to much, go for 36-38 imo...

Re: Msd hei?
A few months ago I installed a MSD Streetfire on my 350. I wanted it timed right so I took it to a guy who knows what he's doing. It ended up being 16 degrees initial with a total of 36 degrees. Truck starts real easy and jumps good when I give it the gas. I don't know how many turns out he set my vacuum advance but you do have 6 more turns available. BTW, I have an RV-1 cam.

Re: Msd hei?
Sounds like your in the ball park 29 centrifical + 10 intial =39 total if your connected to full manifold vacuum the additional advance will only come in when there is no load on the engine. Here is some good reading. There is also a good sticky in the engine and drivetrain section by billa.

Re: Msd hei?
holy hell 51* is insane. his compression must be 4:1.
that is almost a full plugwire ahead of the fire. Last edited by 2tons of fun; 11-17-2009 at 01:47 AM. |

Re: Msd hei?
51 is the total with the vacum line hooked up. 29 was total centrifigul. I might try putting a little more initial in it, it didn't crank hard when starting.

Re: Msd hei?
i dont think you understand, that much timing is going to fawk something up or you have something hooked up wrong.

Re: Msd hei?
I misread the first post but 34*-36* initial + total mechanical is pretty much the sweet spot the vacuum advance number doesn't count towards total advance because full manifold vacuum drops out when engine is under a load

Re: Msd hei?
fixit-p, I read the articles you linked, they make a lot of sense. The MSD instructions said to hook to ported vacuum, I will try full manifold vacuum and go from there. Thanks for the help.
