Marshall Engines??

Have any of you guys ever heard of this company? Ever used any of these engines?

I found a Marshall 383 stroker "used"....old guy says he has put about 700 miles on it. Broke it in with a heavy weight oil. Its suppose to be internal balanced. Comes with intake, Holly carb, taylor dist. and wires. No headers, no power steering pump, no a/c compressor, and no trans. What would it be worth to you??

thanks

Re: Marshall Engines??

I work at autozone as a manager and we sell marshall engines. I even bought a 4.2l six for an 85 jeep cj7 and I am very pleased with the engine. I have had one engine brought back of theirs but that was because they ran it out of oil. they come with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.

I have had the jeep motor for 9 months now and all off road use and beating the hell out of it.

Re: Marshall Engines??

That's interesting because you're suppose to break in a new engine with light weight oil.

Re: Marshall Engines??

I think they're kind of an economy engine. They're rebuilt, not new like crate motors. I didn't know they made a 383 though. I thought they only did stock motors. I know you can order a 350 long block online for about 1000.00

I'm just not sure why someone would put 700 miles on an engine and then just pull it out and sell it.

It depends on the engine really. Gen1 motors are usually best broken in with a straight 30w but certainly not any heavier than that.

Re: Marshall Engines??

Guys I''m just goin on what the guy told me.....he has paper work on the motor and receipts. The motor is still in the truck that it was put in new, he just isnt happy with the gas milage he is getting out of it. He wants a motor that is a good daily driver. I was just wondering what you guy thought it may be worth.....

Re: Marshall Engines??

Well without knowing more about it like what pistons/rods/heads/cam etc it's hard to say. If it's basically stock but with a 400 crank Then I'd say maybe 1800 with the intake carb and dizzy.

Problem is though, if you're asking what it's worth then the fact that he went to all that expense and time to install it but he's just gonna do it again because of gas mileage then I'm not sure I'd pay that much. It just sounds fishy you know? He's gonna lose more money than he will save in gas with a different motor unless he's planning on a daily driver for fifteen years. And I'd want to know exactly how thick the oil he broke it in with was. Typical break in period is at least 1500 miles too so he actually hasn't gotten there yet.

Re: Marshall Engines??

Unless their quality has improved in recent years, i'd pass on it. I installed several of them over the years for "price shopper" customers. Most of them ended up leaking, smoking blowby chuggers just as soon as the warranty was out. A guy that used to work there ended up working for me later. He had some good stories of their "manufacturing". What they considered good cores most people would consider to be boat anchors.

Not that EVERY engine they build is junk. But, I've seen too many of them.

Do you know if they even offered any 383's?

Re: Marshall Engines??

Yes they are. The internally balanced options are crankshafts designed specifically for 383's.

When I said stock with a 400 crank, I meant the stroke length and not an "actual" 400 crank. In other words, the only non-stock option in the motor would be the 3.75" stroke.
