Yes, the pushrods come out. They're held pretty tight by a rubber bushing and it gets hard after so many years. Soak it with Armorall or similar and grab it with a pair of vise grips.

When you put it back in, you may have to smack it with a piece of wood and a hammer until it snaps back in. On the pic below, you can see the ball end that holds it in place.
